Anyone have rules for forces fighting out of thier normal
climate/environment?
Now I am obviously ignoring the fact that no planet is monoclimatic (ala
Tatooine and Hoth).
Examples: IF fighting in artic or cold desert conditions. IF fighting in
tropical rain forest. IAS fighting in hot desert. IAS fighting in tropical
rain forest. Almost anyone fighting in high altitude or low oxygen conditions.
Anyone fighting in heavy atmosphere (but barely breathable). Having to fight
in NBC suits (nuclear, chemical, or biologic warfare has
been used or the planet has not been teraformed - poisonous/acidic/heavy
metal trace elements in the air or oxygen content needs augmentation).
I would think that non Power Armor troops would fight at 1 less quality than
normal when fighting under adverse conditions.
How long would it take to aclimate to new conditions? 2 weeks? Month? 6
Months? Year?
I would think that there would be some attrition of forces due to
environmental accidents (frostbite, heatstoke, disease, etc.). Even if the
troops are properly equiped and trained, people tend to take stupid risks
because some thing is uncomfortable or difficult (at least until the
casualties start to add up). Roll a d6 for to get percent of force that is
down due to environmental conditions?

IF has some excellent cold-desert GEV armor for this environment

IF has some not excellent, but certainly adequate medium yield nukes for this
environment.

Islamic Federation, like every other nations (excepting who, the
Scandanavians?) own a fair variety of planets. Presumably, all these planets
are reoughly spherical, have a least a little axial tilt, and possibly at
least a little orbital eccentricity. At least some of them have significant
bodies of
water--otherwise would make lousy colonization
projects.
Many popular SF movies to the contrary, all these factors combine to create a
wide variety of climates on these planets. Hence there are some Islamic
Federation artic units. Others are light infantry
recruited from near-jungle areas. Yet others are
central units with recruits from all sorts of climates who do training
exercises in a variety of conditions. Rather like the US Army, where a unit
can be deployed to Kuwait one year, and Kosovo two years later.

No, the Alarishi. No "habitable" planets or moons.

Not a heck of a lot. Yes, IF planets have arctic areas, but that doesn't mean
anyone lives there, or has any cause to fight there. If you only have a few
million people on a planet, you can usually pick the prime real estate rather
than places like Canad...ah, that is, places where it's much too cold for
sensible people to live.
Informative, but not helpful.

Of course, Imperial Thematic Mechanized Infantry (Skutatoi), NRE
Panzergrenadiers, and New Israeli infantry all wear fully environmental combat
armor
which serves as NBC, has built-in compressor for high
altitude, automatic filters, etc. And probably
(certaintly for Imperials--I can't speak for anyone
else) climate control. This would only come into play with the light infantry
forces that wear partial body armor. And since the reason to have light
infantry is for lousy terrain (mountains, jungles, cities, etc.) they should
have been training under all sorts of adverse conditions.

Even on present-day Earth, peoples who follow Islam live in a fair
variety of environments: Arabia, Afghanistan, Central Asia (pretty cold in
winter), Indonesia... Not to mention the emigrants to Europe or America.
Not all of these are IF territory, of course.

G'day Brian,

While I'm touched you thought of my guys, I'd like to point out that it says
"most IAS colonies are joint ventures in marginally habitable areas of
systems (hot or cold) claimed by another nation" - though the cold ones
seem to be the ones I get offered the most;)
> I would think that non Power Armor
Sounds like a good idea, maybe even 2 less if they were suddenly dropped
into high altitude with no suits etc. If they were in full NBC suits I'd
allow them to have standard quality but reduce their movement abilities by a
grade (i.e. all act as encumbered etc).

Sound idea. You could also make wounds more lethal or harder to fix.
