I've got some Car Wars minis that I've based with Asphalt bases, and I quite
like the effect...I'm not sure how well it would work for your fiougres,
though, for reasons that will become obvious....

Basically, I used Evergreen sheet styrene to make plastic bases of regular
size, and then cut pieces of fine grade sandpaper to fit the plastic. Painted
it black, drubrushed it with a bit of gray, and it looks quite nice.

I don't know if you can easily cut these minis off thier bases; if not, this
will do you no good at all. As an alternative, you might try my favorite
basing material: Acrylic Gel Medium. They sell the stuff in several different
textures, and while I normally use the
Coarse grade on my bases (to give the effect of grass and/or dirt), the
Fine stuff dries to
a texture not unlike 25mm asphalt -- a grain, but a *very* fine grain.

The stuff is made by Liquitex, can be found in most art supply stores, and is
very easy to work with. I just glop it on with a dental tool, and let it dry
overnight. The result is tough, slightly flexible, and takes paint very well
indeed. Getting it perfectly flat might be a little difficult, but shouldn't
be impossible if you're using the Fine grade.

I second the call for acrylic medium. I comes in many types and they are
excellent to adding texture to otherwise boring surfaces.

Another option is to use crushed kitty litter mixed with water. It forms

into
a paste-like substance. Add some PVA glue to hold it all together and
apply with a flat knife. I think that sand may be a bit rougher at scale than
"real" asphalt. Makes excellent gravel roads (and roofs on buildings) though.

Cheers, Tony Christney

I'm basing my 15mm UN troops (hm, UN, KV, IF...I seem to take the Bad Guys a
lot) and am wondering how to get the effect of asphalt. Righ
now I'm thinking to put on glue, then sand, then a glue/water mix over
top, then paint it black (with the occasional white or yellow lines for
pavement markings). Any other ideas?

Hi folks,

This will work well, but use very fine grade sand. Coarse sand will give you a
look that is too rough, but if you get the really fine grade sand available at
pet stores that sell fish, that would work. I don't use it myself because when
you glue it down the texture is too fine for what I usually want, but I have a
friend who uses that fine grade sand a lot, and for your application, I think
it would work well.

I think it would be coral sand...??? Not sure though.

I really like John C's idea of using sandpaper, though as he points out, that
won't work if you can't get the figure off the base...

Wet-and-dry sandpaper.

G'day,

Try fine model railway ballast. You can either buy black or buy brown and do
an ink wash over the top. Works a charm.

FYI for anyone else who tries this, I thought about the acrylic medium but
decided to use the sand instead. The texture (beach sand) is a
little too rough for scale but it looks okay--however, it's proving
difficult to get the surface like pavement, it tends to look more like the
paving truck just dropped off the last dribs and drabs of its load right where
the figures are standing.
