Subject: Scattergun Symbol

Hello All,

I was looking over the Kra'Vak material, and got to thinking about SSD
symbols.

As Tim accurately assessed (and acted on), the Railgun needed a new icon. I
think that the hex was an excellent choice.

However, consider the Scattergun. They are omnidirectional, yet their icon
implies a facing. Since we're changing stuff, why not make this better as
well?

I was thinking that a hex with a solid diamond (square ratated 45 deg.) inside
might work. As might a 8 pointed solid "star" (two squares, one ratated 45
deg.).

However, I quite open to suggestions.

I came up with a design

see:

Hex with alternative segments colored black and white. As the scattergun is
the equivalent to a KV PDS I think this is very appropriate.

I like it. I say we go with that. Any other opinions?

I hate to nitpick, but won't that symbol be easily confused with the
international "radioactivity" symbol?

Not really:

its in a different context, radioactivity symbols appear on nuclear flasks etc
not on SSD's. For example you don't confuse the armour symbol for the letter
'O'.

its a different graphic, radioactivity has a circular centre and circular
arcs, and no hexagonal bounding box and the opposite sectors coloured black.
Completely different.

I wouldn't think so. Especially since very few FT ship SSDs are radioactive
(sorry, couldn't resist).

I don't see it as a problem, and they are enough different that there should
be no confusion. And all kidding aside, I've never seen an international
radioactivity symbol used in relation to FT.

How about a stylized side-by-side shotgun with detail enough to show it
has Damascus barrels? No? Ok then.... Me too... <G>

Well, I'm quite happy to use it as the [OFFICIAL] symbol, and put it in FB2,
if that's OK.

Yep, the directional nature of the old one *is* confusing.

it's certainly not completely different; the first thing i thought when i saw
it, not having read these posts, was "radioactive". the symbol is very like
the radiactivity symbol, really.

however, it's a simple, easy-to-draw symbol, it's a logical derivation
of
the ft2.5 beam and PDAF symbols, and it looks cool. it takes about 15-45
seconds to get over the "wow, it's the radioactivity symbol" effect. after
that, no problem.

it gets my vote (which is now somewhat redundant as it's been given the
[OFFICIAL] thumbs-up).
