Subject: Robotech stuff (longish)

I just found someone to play Full Thrust here at Osan AB, Korea. I was
thinking of running a campaing and was trying to decide on the genre and
background that I wanted to use. The old Robotech cartoon came to mind and I
started to try to make all the adjustments for the game. It fit pretty well
actually. Big numbers of ships battling it out in ship to ship combat
with fighters, massive missile barrages, carriers, and mega-guns all
over the place. The only problem were the figthers. I remember the fighter
type craft being used in a lot of different ways.

first there were the destroids. These were more like battlemechs. They were
used to protect the ship from fighter craft kind of like an ablative PDS. If
two ships got close enough they could even damage the ship.

Second you had the veritechs. These were fighters that could turn into
battlemechs when the need arose. They would fly to an opponents ship
avoiding/killing the opposing fighters than transform and land on the
hull. They would than either take out exterior mountings or try to gain entry
into the ship where they would reek all sorts of havoc.

The enemy had variants on these themes themselves. Usually not transformable
though.

For game purposes I need to keep the flavor of these units but not make it to
complicated in the process. I looked at all the stuff done previously and
tried to find something that fit well. Here is my first draft.

Destroid- Counts as a fighter group for all purposes except that they
stay 'on' the ship that launched them (they actually walk around on the hull
of the ship). This means they can dogfight fighters that attack their ship and
may fire on opposing ships within 6". They should also probably take
casualties as the ship does but I dont know how to work this yet.

Veritech- Counts as fighters. In battleoid mode(human type robot) they
have a move of only 6" but count as interceptors with aces in dogfights(they
were super manueverable in this mode). they may also 'land' on an enemy ship.
After doing this they may make needle beam attacks instead of normal fighter
damage. They should also take damage if the ship they are on does same as
above.

The ships- these are the easy part. The Macross1 is just a huge ship
with
a REALLY big gun and two attached ships(carrier+landing assault ship).
The bad guys just show up in mass quantity with the occasional good ship
commanded by some goofy commander character.

This has gone on long enough. Please let me know what you think. I am out
here in no-know-where-land with no one to tell me if what I am doing is
silly or not.

Thanks for the help That Chuk Guy

Wow, what timing! My kids and I have been enjoying the Macross reruns on
Cartoon network and I was wondering how to get them into a game of FT...

Great ideas for Robotech conversion. We'll try 'em out here. What are you
using for miniatures? All that I've seen are the plastic models (1/144
-
1/170 scale Veritechs and "1/2000" ships - rather large for the usual
gaming table). Are there any smaller, metal figures available? Where could I
find them?

Thanks,

I was at a Japanese import store that specialized in Anime and they had a
model kit that included three or four of the
battlepods/veritechs/bioroids in the set. These were all plastic and
about 2 inches tall. They might work okay.

Another thing that you could do for the Veritechs is to find a set
of modern carrier aircraft in 1/350th or 1/700 scale and use all the
F-14s
for the Veritechs in fighter mode.

For the Zentraedi try finding some of the silent Death Night Brood
figures. I do use some of the small F-14 figs for veritechs and some
Power armor type figs in 6mm scale for the destroids.

Actually, I think the ships are rated at 1/20,000. You can model the
fighters by careful sculpting the point of a pin. ;->=

I know I have 1/350 and similar scale plastic fighters in pack/boxes(I'm
thinking Tamiya); you won't necessarily have to buy carrier model kits for
them. However, be aware all I've seen are solid castings. Lot's of cut and
paste and waste, but something I'd rather do in plastic. Attempting
conversions of the 1/700 fighters would be dicey for the five thumbs I
have on each hand, but you're welcome to try.

Figures for LOGH?!?!? Where? I heard rumors, and was trying to get someone in
Japan to score me some, but they were WAY expensive, and underground. I hear
the producers were nervous, perhaps with copyright concerns. Several of us on
the list would like to know this, I'm sure. I know someone on this list had
some piccies on the web awhile ago...

Tamiya make two different boxed sets of modern US carrier aircraft. Each box
contains 10 aircraft, 2 each of five different types in
1/350th scale. One box has two F-14s in with a a choice of forward or
back swept wings. They retail here for around £5, so I guess that's
about $7-$8 in the US. A fairly expensive way of raising your
Veritech squadrons :-( but on the other hand you could use the rest
of the aircraft (F/A-18, A-7, A-6, EA-6B, Hawkeye, F-4, SH-3) in DSII
games :-).

Alternatively, if you can find FT scale Macross ships, Skytrex in the
UK make lots of 1/3000th aircraft models including an F-14 to use
with their large range of ships. Unlike GZG or Brigade FT fighters these are
cast on fairly thick bases but they're relatively
inexpensive - roughly the same as Jon's Starfuries ... damn ... Star
Tigers (always get those mixed up, can't imagine why).

I have seen them in a couple of hobbie stores in the US. They were official.
They looked really good to.
