This is actually a very good point. In all probability, when FTIII/FT3
is actually out, it will simply be called FT, with "3rd Edition" on a new
cover, much like the current book. Using FTIII or FT3 is a convenient
shorthand right now to differentiate it from FT 2nd Edn, during playtesting
and development.
The reason that Dirtside became Dirtside II (and likewise with SG/SGII)
is that in both these cases the "II" version was actually a completely new
game, with very little left of the original versions. This will NOT be the
case with FT 3rd Edn, which will be an amended and added-to new edition
of
the existing FT (in the same way as FT 2nd Edn was a much-expanded but
fundamentally unchanged version of FT 1st Edn.).

For any new list members wondering when FT 3rd Edn will be out, we don't
exactly know - probably after we do BDS for DSII/SGII; however, the
forthcoming FT Fleet Book (being worked on now, and scheduled for sometime
in the early part of '98 - basically as soon as it is finished!) will
contain a lot of the changes proposed for "FT3" and will form a bridge between
2nd and 3rd editions.

Jon, in your last official message on the matter you said that FT 3rd Edn
would come out before BDS. I was just wondering what changed your mind. Is FT
3rd Edn taking longer to playtest than originally planned? Not that I'm
complaining or anything (I'm REALLY looking forward to BDS). I was just
curious. "Unlike serial killer profiling, writing is a lonely and
depressing profession." - Jose Chung, Millenium

Re: FT, third edition.

Has there been any thought for defining a ship record symbol for the following
systems: Weasel (CRU) Weasel (CAP) Tender FTL drive "Strike the flag"

Another idea that Brian Bell and I have done with our ship record sheets is a
brief line or space for the ship mass and point value. With this method, a
player can quickly view a chart for the numerical information.

TWIMC, I have been using a small 'w' (Cruiser) and a large 'W' (capital)
and putting them inside a beam battery circle w/o arc markers.
The Tug FTL drive is shown (by me) as a triangle of FTLs commected. I have no
suggestion of striking, I have never seen that done.

Bye for now,

I've drawn a small flag as the "Strike" system and have used a hexagon with
the letters CRU or CAP for the cruiser and capital weasel systems
respectively. I've not used any special symbol for the Tender FTL system.

I'm interested in seeing a consistent representation method and FT, third
edition will close up any discrepancies.

In fact, FTIII and BDS will probbaly be worked on very much in parallel
after the FT-FB is done, and which one gets published first may well
simply come down to which one is finished first. BDS is likely to be the first
because of the demand for an SG/DS supplement, but of course we may
change our minds again!:)
