Thinking about a modified version of Full Thrust for lower tech space combat.
Smaller fleets, no screens, maybe no FTL, lots of missiles and guns.

The research phase consists of reading books. So far I've got the Expanse
series, Aliens Colonial Marines Technical Manual, and the two Manticore

Ascendant books by Timothy Zahn.

Anyone want to recommend others?

Take a peek at Transhuman Space from SJ Games.

There are a lot of good ideas in there.

C.J. Cherryh, Devil to the Belt (Heavy Time, Hellburner omnibus). Also
Downbelow Station, Chanur books, etc.

Look at Trowbridge/Smith Exordium: Yes, FTL, but some of the non-FTL
battles are interesting. Tacponders, anyone?

See my friend Winchell Chung's Atomic Rockets site--he links to a lot of
titles.

The Expanse series has that.

Rail Guns, PDS and Torpedoes (long range missiles basically). Plus Stealth,
ECM, Sensors, and sneaky tricks.

You might also want to take a look at some non-fiction:

All by Ken Burnside. They're short books that describe the physics of
potential space combat.
