Subject: REALLY, REALLY BIG SHIPS

OK, since I'm not the only one who likes REALLY, REALLY BIG SHIPS (sorry, I
had to do it....), here is a couple of ideas for "why" and a couple of good
ideas for "why not".
"why"
* It's an alien vessel, it got lost / mis-jumped / decided to look for
it's lost whales / whatever. It just happened to wander into manned
space. Fight ensues. Could give a good reason for that big a** beam. Maybe,
for anime players, a class 16 to those 50' tall aliens is "standard".
http://netnow.micron.net/~ericski/scenario2.html for a game that I'm
currently planning. * It's a simulator ship and the battle is a virtual
training excercise.
Sort of a Kobashi-Maru incident. "Cadet you're faced with a 1/4 of a
million ton ship. Your frigate is ready to engage. What do you do...." *
Planetary seige ship. Bunch of marines, some drop ships, streamlined hull, and
a big drive. I just landed a brigade (or whatever) on your planet.
http://netnow.micron.net/~ericski/scenario.htm for a game where I did
just that. * You got a really good deal on a Star Destroyer platic model and
you just happen to think it will fit in nicely as an FSE super ship.

"why not" * Two needle hits and you're no longer able to maneuver. * One
needle hit and you're no longer able to jump. * I can get a whole bunch of 199
point missile barges (1 thrust, fragile hull, 20 MT missiles, not much else)
that each have 20 emp or needle missiles for the same as your supership. How
many can you stop before
they take out your ability to maneuver / escape?
* Under the current system, you can only launch 2 fighters per turn. You're
not going to be defending against all of mine very well.....

Just some thoughts. Take as you want....

there is a section of a shipyard that is off limits and is is filled with the
frame of a ship that is realy big... I just wonder what you would think of a
carrier that has 48 fighter bays (288 fighters) and a lot of other stuff, alto
that is a multi section super ship for FT2?

Ten things to do when outmassed 100:1 1. Load the cargo bay with antimatter,
FTL point blank & fly into the hanger bay, ramming the ship inside its armour
belt. 2. Send Luke Jaywalker to put a torpedo into the cooling vent,
detonating the main reactor. 3. Shoot whoever designed the exercise with
extreme prejudice. 4. Flee the sector & set yourself up as a pirate king out
on the frontier. 5. Ask if they need any scoutships as you're willing to
defect. 6. Organise an orgy & invite the entire enemy crew. When they're
exhausted, tow their ship into the nearest sun.
7. Lure them into the gravity well of the nearest planet/sun. A
ship that big might not have big enough drives to escape. 8. Pray really,
really, really hard for divine intervention. 9. Send in a squad of ESU
Spetznaz suicide squad using a cold entry to board the enemy vessel & blow the
reactor. 10. Load whoever gave you the orders into the missile tubes & push
the button.

you fergot some: 11. load Win95 12. put another ship next to it, the grav
forces will pull the two ships apart. There are more, assuming this link works
you might get a kick out of the

this is how to destroy a B-10, a BIG battle ship from Star Fleet
Battles, a fun game, but it take to long to play.

Or 13. Tell Duck Dodgers this is his new survey ship & he is to go and claim
planet X. 14. Tell them they must upgrade from Win95 to Win98 & watch all the
systems crash.

Leave. ;-)

This sorta kinda reminds me of a certain post a long while back on SF quotes.
I don't remember who originally posted it, but in particular:

"What's that on our sensors?" "It's an, um, cloud, of starships." "Cloud?" "I
know it's not a strictly correct military term, but I count eighty thousand
three hundred and twenty two ships. I've told them that we're surrendering."

While it hasn't been made 'official' yet (ie, not specifically stated in the
Fleetbook one way or other), the launch restriction has been kinda relaxed
somewhat. (basically you can start the scenario with all your fighters
launched). We did some playtesting of the 'no restrictions launch' and
discovered it really didn't matter if you started with all your fighters
already on the board, or aboard the ship and just launched them en mass (just
that turn your ship cannot maneuver). So I tend to go with the 'no launch
restrictions' bit. But it's a house rule until the 'official word' comes
through. ;-)
