The Wombles of Wimbledon common.
A old children's TV puppet series. With a "green"/recycling theme.
The wombles themselves were small puppets that looked like small ewoks or
miniature wookies. They had a pointed, conical nose, rather like old sp*ce
m*rines from you know who. I can't remember the guy who invented them, but
someone in England should know. "The wombles of wimbledon common are we!"
...
"Making good use of...." and so on.
[Help me, Dave. My memory is going......]
> The Wombles of Wimbledon common.
Or Australia for that matter:)
The guy who wrote it was actually a girl - Elisabeth Beresford.
And as for the song...
Underground, Overground, Wombling Free, The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are
we. Making good use of the things that we find, Things that the everyday folks
leave behind.
Uncle Bulgaria, He can remember the days when he wasn't behind The Times, With
his map of the World. Pick up the papers and take them to Tobermory!
Wombles are organized, work as a team. Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean.
Underground, Overground, wombling free, The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are
we!
People don't notice us, they never see, Under their noses a Womble may be. We
womble by night and we womble by day, Looking for litter to trundle away.
We're so incredibly, utterly devious Making the most of everything. Even
bottles and tins. Pick up the pieces and make them into something new,
Is what we do!
Yes it is probably very sad that I can remember this.
Cheers

Sounds like it shares a lot of ideas with Fraggle Rock (by Jim Henson)
Maybe an inspiration to Mr.Henson? (how old is this thing we're talking
about?)

I remember seeing these Wombles on Captain Kangaroo when I was a kid (
mid/late 70s, I'm guessing). I recall a different song... something
about "Remember! Remember! Remember you're a Womble!"
So when is GZG going to release some Not Womble 25mm? (Hey, Sa'avasku
bio-construct ground troops! Yeah, that's the ticket....)

For those outside the UK, the Wombles enjoyed an actually pretty lengthy pop
career in the UK. It was four blokes inside Womble suits playing the
instruments. Just shows you
can sell some people /anything/. That was one of the songs they sang.

Personally, I see them more as engineers/medics than your typical grunt.
Madame
Chole' (GOD knows how you spell that) is DEFINITELY a non-combatant.
Even with that wooden spoon of hers.

For those, like myself, who have never seen a Womble, check here:

for some pictures. The resemblence to Space Marines is uncanny....

Doesn't her mangle count as a terror weapon? Wouldn't the MacWomble count as
some sort of frenzied fanatic?
