Subject: QUESTION FOR OERJAN

OERJAN, exactly wot do you mean by defining which SG II scenario i am talking
about?

i was not aware that SG II had gone the route of the newer versions of 40K
with a set number of specific, offici, gaming scenarios to be gamed to the
point of barfing from boredom.

if it as, a shame.

i was rather under the impression that a person could set down and design
almost limitless scenarios for gming in the SG II system.

G'day,

OK I'm not Oerjan, but I'll be presumptuous and try and answer for him
;)

> i was not aware that SG II had gone the route of the newer

Well you can breath easy because it hasn't.

> i was rather under the impression that a person could set down and

You can.

I think he was referring to something like the fact people like me (who
haven't had combat experience, haven't read much sci-fi, haven't as many
resources to hand as yourself, nor the long time experience of gaming) can get
a little lost as to where to apply some of your suggestions if you don't give
us firm examples... not all us are as quick on the uptake as Laserlight, who
(being a salesman) knows how to figure out what you really want even if you
didn't say it;)

Cheers

I was referring mainly to the post "HARKEN", where you started talking about
your second least favourite politico... without any hints whatever of
how to use this piece of "background information" in a GZG-game
scenario.

> i was not aware that SG II had gone the route of the newer versions of

It hasn't. You can make up pretty much any scenario you want for any of the
GZG games. A "scenario" is any set of background/situation + terrain
sketch
+ forces involved, BTW - it doesn't have to be part of an official
"scenario list"... unless of course you believe every word GW publishes.

FWIW, I don't believe every word GW publishes.

The fact that the GZG games don't have specified lists of scenarios means that
you need to provide quite a lot of detail about the scenario you have
in mind - it isn't enough to just say "Ambush" or "Dawn Patrol" like it
would be in WH40K.

However, you didn't give ANY details of any potential scenario - not
even the single word which would've been sufficient in WH40K.

You can, nothing has changed; in fact, I'm very much in favour of the sort of
characterisation and "fleshing out" of your units and personnel that you
obviously use. Nothing wrong with this at all, and when we finally get FMA
Skirmish out you'll find that this sort of thing becomes even more integral to
the game.

BUT, as several people have already pointed out, the original "HARKEN" posting
made NO mention of games at all, or any of the use of the personality you were
describing in a game; it simply looked like a rant about a US politico that
you disliked, and that I (as a Brit) have certainly never heard of.

If you'd simply prefaced it with something like "Here's a good new character
template to use as an NPC", then your intentions would have been a lot
clearer.....

Aside from this, I do still think that the idea of a separate
"gloves-off"
list for use when things start to drift really off-topic is a possible
solution to a lot of the OT/flame* problems the list has been having
recently, but it is a solution that would only work with the
co-operation
of everyone involved.

<g> thanks--but my job actually involves figuring out that you really
need A when you don't actually know what you want, but you talked to some
consultant so you're parroting that you want B.

NSTRH: Phone rings at 4:45pm--
Client: "I'm Pat from Thus-and-such Company, I 'm going to a board
meeting and I need to know how much it will cost to translate our website into
five languages" Me: "Great! How many words on your website?"
Client: "Uh...."
Me: "Okay, we'll come back to that. What languages do you want?"
Client: "Uh..."
Me: "....okay, we'll come back to that. What day is your board meeting?"
Client: "Starts in five minutes. Three minutes, actually." Me: "Grrrrreat.
Okay. (glances at website table of contents) Call it $95,000 per language and
Pat, don't *ever* tell anybody that you got that number from me."
