Offhand one book stands out for space combat.

Renegades Honor by Michael Stackpole (I think. I'll have to check the author).

Its based in the Renegade Legion Universe, a TOG (huge totalitarian
government) squadron goes renegade and attempts to defect to the Commonwealth
(nominal good guys). Plenty of squadron battles and a couple of larger fleet
battles. Worth a read if you can find it.
