I'm making terrain again. Anyone have a good primer for styrofoam that won't
eat it? If I find nothing better I'll use watered white glue from a spray
bottle, several coats. There has to be something better though.

We use acrylic paint. Just slather it on and you can flock strait to it or
wait for it to dry and put on the hite glue.

I find that simply painting it with a water based paint does the trick. Get a
big jar of a black or green color and go to town with a big brush!

Several people have mentioned using acrylics here. It's more of a pain to have
to brush on the primer, but it works fine.
I went out and bought a big can of a very cheapo brand of water-based
black acrylic latex house paint, and use that for terrain priming. Works
really well, even if watered down quite substantially. And a *lot* less
expensive than spray cans...

I simply painted directly with cheap, house latex paint. It costs US
$5-7 per pint, and can match any color you can come up with. I've
done several 1'x2' terrain boards and various hills and such, and

I use an airbrush for most of my basecoating, so water thinned acrylics seem
to work very well with terrain. I usually dont bother with priming terrain,
tho. I have a half gallon or so of some moss green paint i just apply with a
foam bursh. It occasionall takes two coats for good coverage, but once it is
flocked, it looks very well done.
As always, your milage may vary.

A very easy option is Testor's model spray paints. They're safe on most types
of styrene (including foam) and they work great. A friend of mine has been
using them for decades.
