Hello all: After ordering a cadre of Eli's Retro PA figs, I'm on sort of a
powerd
armor reading binge. I've just finished re-reading "Starship Troopers"
for the 32nd time, and I've waiting for Haldeman's "The Forever War" and
Steakley's "Armor" to come to be via inter-library loan. (The Muskego
Public Library doesn't have much of a selection unless your into Louis Lamoure
westerns and paperback romance novels.) I was wondering if anyone
else can think of some other military sci-fi novels where powered armor
plays a prominent role?

There's an anthology called (I think) _Body Armor 2000_, or something
like that. I own it; but I can't remember the editor, and therefore can't find
it right now.... The stories were of uneven quality, bur some of them were
quite good.

David Drake's _Northworld_ had some PA in it...I assume that the sequels
did as well, but I gave up on the book halfway through, so I can't be certain.

Damn. I know that there must be more, but I can't think of any right now.

Hmmm. You WOULD ask after I packed up my paperbacks!

There are a number of PA stories in Jerry Pournelle's "There Will Be War"
anthology series. The whole series is worth reading, anyway (9 volumes, I
think, again they are packed). There was a good story complete with diagrams
that showed a fictional progression of tanks from something close to what we
have today to essentially ultra powerful PA. There were a number of PA like
stories.

There are a couple of military sections in Dan Simmons' "Hyperion". It's a
good book, I really enjoyed the first two (haven't read the third) but I'm not
sure it's what you want.

That's all I can think off the top of my head. If you really want a list, I
can ask my friend Lorna and have her go through the library on a research
mission... That's what they are there for. Just be prepared for a HUGE list.

Haldeman recently published "Forever Free", it's a sequel to Forever War...
and very odd. We may be seeing the start of a Late Haldeman period. But
there's not much PA stuff in the book, and it's a Forever War vintage suit,
not a new model. Still, and especially from the library, go ahead and read it.

Hmmmmmmm... I don't think there's much else, unless someone edited an
anthology. I checked Barnes & Noble, and Amazon - but found no clues in
the 'related books' categories. That may well be it for novels.

I actually quite enjoyed the "thematic" sequel to _The Forever War_:
_The
Forever Peace_. The "Soldierboys" are essentially remotely piloted
powered armor, and would translate pretty easily into SGII.

When looking for this book, I found _Body Armor: 2000_ as well. Edited
by (of course) Joe Haldeman. One of the early stories is a "history" of PA,
and has some interesting pictures.

Yes although I don't recall who edited it either. Martin Greenwood? Not sure.
There is also some battle armor in the Miles Vorkosigan books although it
isn't prominent, and of course the BattleTech and similar books. In the first
section of Tuf Voyaging by George RR Martin there is a suit of "Unquin battle
armor" but again it's not

I think Dean Ing did a book, ("Firefight 2000" I think?) which touched on all
sorts of topics relating to "future" warfare. As I recall the book came out in
the 80s.

Very short and not a book at all... I think that there was a nice little clip
at the start of GEV (Steve Jackson Game).

There have been a lot of good suggestions here, but there's one that I
can add, and that's the _Exordium_ series by Sherwood Smith and Dave
Trowbridge (the books are _The Phoenix in Flight_, _Ruler of Naught_, _A
Prison Unsought_, _The Rifter's Covenant_, and _The Thrones of Kronox_).
PA is not the point of the stories, but the Arkadic marines use PA. Warning:
some of the books in the series can be QUITE hard to find (I think #2 and #4,
possibly also #3, so you may want to make sure you have access to all of
them). The last one also has a section on what's necessary for PA training in
that universe. The books are also just very good books in their own right, and
the rest of the universe merits
examination too - it's just a pity that the technology and space combat
couldn't really be integrated into FT.

Although it's not a "prominent role" there is PA in "Honor of the Queen" which
is a good read regardless. (The PA is during the assault on Blackbird base)

Prominent role... just about the only books I can come up with that haven't
been mentioned may get me razzed, but I'll venture ahead anyway: GW Space
Marine books. Only one I've read is Deathwing, which is not a recent
publication; it's a short story collection of mixed (dubious? ^_- )
quality, but I was on my early GW kick gaming stage at the time.

Eluki bes shahar's "Hellflower and Butterfly" trilogy (that's the title of the
combined book club edition) has Imperial Hoplite Armor in it for a while
(found in "Darktraders", the second book, and used in both the second and
third), which was decomissioned as being too dangerous for the Fleet

The Fleet and Battlestation anthologies edited by David Drake and Bill Fawcett
contain some stories that have powered armor trooops as the focus. In
addition, there's Enemy of My Enemy by Ben Ohlander and David Drake.

Finally, there's a little bit of powered armor in Bill The Galactic Hero by
Harry Harrison.

I'm sure there's more, but I just can't think of any at the moment!

I'll tie in to an earlier thread. In Glen Cook's Starfishers (plus Passage at
Arms) series, *spoiler alert*

An alien threat is discovered which strikes me as very similar to that in "The
Fleet" i.e. a territorially expansionistic, fanatically xenophobic,
technologically advanced species is working its way rimwards from the galactic
core. We're in the way. Much of the action of the second two in the series
(Starfisher and Star's End) turn out to revolve around attempts to acquire
ancient weapons to help stop the advancing threat-species. The books
leave off without the threat being resolved, although another problem gets
very permanently resolved. Maybe, now that the Black Company series has
concluded
(if he writes another of those, he's out there past Philip K Dick - but
I'll haunt ebay for advance reader copies) just maybe, he'll go back to SF and
do
more with the series - it does have SEQUEL stamped in big red letters on
the last page.

Try: "The sand wars series" by Charles Ingrid A series of six books following
the owner of a suit of powered armor. (I won't give away more than that.) They
are: #1 Solar Kill, #2 Lasertown Blues, #3 Celestial Hit List, #4 Alien
Salute, #5 Return Fire, #6 Challenge Met.

They were published from 1987 to 1990 by Daw.
Here and there through-out the series you get to see some of the
interesting stuff about powered armor, and their operations. The stories were
interesting also. Anyone interested, will have to search through the used book
stores.

In other, more obscure games, 2300 A.D. had extensive rules for "combat
walkers" an early and bug-ridden form of powered armor.

I must correct my previous statement that the books were out of print...I was
just
at the bookstore today...they have been re-released as a two volume set.
 Three
novels in each volume.
