Subject: planetary invasion games.

Hi
I am looking for a hex/board type game that can deal with
planetary invasion. The scale wil be divisional with the smallest element
being a company (as a strength marker rather than detail). I need the game as
link between space gaming and dirtside. Can anyone help. So if anyone knows of
any modules either commercial or web based that can handle planetary assault
then I would be very grateful. I am fairly conversant with cyberboard and
capable of writing my own CB modules so I would be especially pleased if
anyone knows of a CB nbased system I am however not fussy. Any game system
will do.

Thanks in advance

PS if a commercial game is available, then the sooner I can get this info the
better as I will be in thge UK for SELWG and thus able to hunt it down.

Bob,

The first one that springs to mind is Battleforce, which was then planetary
invasion game for batteltech.
The smallest units where lances/platoons. There where 2 editions and
only the second really covered the entire invasion cycle.

Other one that occur are:

Invasion: Earth - GDW's traveller based game (but this is fairly rare)
Cerberus - Task Force Games, all units are battalions. (Also pretty
rare)

There was also an entry in the Renegade Legion series - Prefect? but I
don't know anything about that.

Others on the list have mentioned Renegade Legion: Prefect. I couldn't
recommend that game enough. Sadly it's out of print now, but if you could
find it on e-bay, you should definitely get it. The "Operational
Briefing" booklet in it alone something good to have, as it details the stages
of a planetary invasion, with plenty of diagrams. (with the ground units being
represented in NATO style symbols!) Some of the playtesters of the game were
actually members of the Combat Simulations Group at the Royal Military College
of Canada.

I have Prefect, but have never had a chance to play it.. I have kept it just
because I really liked the rules. It dealt alot with supply and unit signature
and sensor ratings, all based on units game stats... When an encounter took
placed, you could then jump to the various RL family game, and determine the
outcome there if desired.. All in all, pretty cool. Joe

Many thanks to all who have replied. I searched the web for prefect (renegade
legion)and have found a second hand copy with a supplier who is attending
SELWG on Sunday. I am going to England just for the show so it's just perfect.
many thanks to all

I'm not at all crazy about the Renegade Legion games. I always thought the
game system to base a planetary invasion game on would be Invasion Earth by
GDW. The rules are in the Classic Traveller Reprint #5 by Far Future
Enterprises.

If I were to modify a non-sci-fi game to do planetary invasions, I would
start with the old Avalon Hill game, TacAir, and then streamline it. And for
those who pefer "Nuke 'em from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." TacAir
has rules for tactical nukes...

Civilization III has a nice Terrain generator that can be used to generate a
world. The only problem is that once you get it into the world you play by Civ
III rules so other rule systems are out.

The other version of CIV (not Sid Myers) did have space stations and orbital
craft but I never tried to modify it.
