John, I think, said:
And believe me, satellite analysis is NOT very easy. I've seen some imagery of
resolution good enough to distinguish machine gun nests and there were some
things on there I had no idea what they were.
[Tomb] Not denigrating your ability, but are
you a trained IMINT specialist? I think not. I'd expect the IMINT specialist
to have about as much chance of recognizing a random pile of engineer gear as
you do of reading most sat intel photos (even good ones) right.
Also, on another note, I totally agree with John's comments on war doctrine. I
meant to say "war by doctrine ALONE" pretty much went out with WW1. Doctrine
is still used (obviously) and gives a reasonable starting point most times. Of
course, bad intel or a cunning enemy can futz you up royally. But that's why
games are interesting!
Hopping thoughts again:
Why didn't the satellite recon see the neandrethals? They were in deep caves.
Or in the alien ruins which (boy, do the patrol guys wish their guys knew it!)
block sensor sweeps. Or they were initially mistaken for larger predators (not
organized humanoid life).
I like the idea with the KV. Of course, it has gotten to the point where
friends of mine, when playing Stargrunt, seeing two armies set up against one
another, ask "So when do the KV appear?". (They like to show up in the middle
of other battles sometimes... for various interesting reasons).
Also, I'd love to see John write an appreciation from the perspective of the
enemies of his Nea Rhomanoi of how they would take apart the forces he arrays
against them. One would think that his force structures may have assets, but
they must also have drawbacks (all do) and it would be interesting to see how
the NAC, NSL, etc would attack them.

Concur. Of course, sometimes the weakness is "This unit can whip any three
enemy units. Of course, you're outnumbered five to one..."
One of the weaknesses of the historical Byzantine army was that it often
depended on the quality of the leader. Under good leaders they excelled, but
poor leaders could wreck the army in a generation, to the point where military
readiness became a joke. Of course factional infighting was also a problem. If
I had a nickel every time some Byzantine campaign against "barbarians" stalled
because some Anatolian noble rebelled...:) Of course the Space Byzantines have
all the modern conveniences such as staff colleges to ensure quality, so the
first point is not of a problem. But I bet the NRE is still prone to internal
Byzantine (sic) intrigues, often affecting its foreign policy. On the
battlefield, this could mean that you can have your armies fighting alongside
NRE forces against other NRE factions in a civil war. Maybe NAC
units (or covertly-supported mercenaries) and some noble's boukellari
fight it out with Thematic or even Tagmatic troops?

Heh. Or worse, some Norman mercenary decided the paycheck wasn't enough, he'd
rather take a chunk of Cilicia.

Havn't had a full-blown civil war (yet) but things got
real shaky after the RH killed an Emperor in battle. There actually was a
short firefight in the Imperial palace (the legitemate Emperor personally
leading Varangian against Fleet Marines loyal to an admiral). There was also
an incident in the same war where a Spanish mercenary company brought in to
garisson Hellas after we deployed their thematics mutinied and siezed the
planet. There was also a rebellion by a corps commander that was stepped on by
a demonstration from the Fleet and a show of force by the Tagmata.

Bingo.
Which means you need plenty of trained IMINT specialists, who can only stare
at film for so long before they go crosseyed. How long to go over a planet?
I'd have to ask my old man (IMINT warrent officer) and I'm not sure he'd be
able to give me a good answer. But I do know that at one point he worked in a
large office full of guys who spent their time looking at El Salvador. Do you
think that if they could find all the FMLN the Salvadoran war would have
lasted as long as it did? And FMLN has a much larger signature than a pack of
neanderthals.

Besides being really thin on the ground? If there are weaknesses I'm not sure
what they are. After all, if
I did I'd fix it. Go ahead and try it--I'm basically
reduced to breaking out the 'hot' packages.

Dirtside minis with Stargrunt rules?

Please note that I was NOT the one, this time, to suggest using 6mm
figs for StarGrunt--although it's so eminently logical that it hardly
needs to be suggested anyway, ie it should be obvious.

Anyone got about 2-3 batallions of 6mm power armor
based individually?

Ah. Well that would be a problem. I was thinking in terms of using the
2/3/4 6mm
infantry stands (since Stargrunt seems to be primarily squads shooting at
squads) and trade out the stands to "make change for units" if you break off
detachments and such.
That many? Who's got 2-3 battalions (note the spelling :) of 25 mm
power armour to play it in the other scale?

You have joined the 6mm Heresy. Congratulations. If there is an Inquisitor of
the One True Scale (I'm not sure if it's 25mm, large
25mm, 28mm, or quite what--call it "big expensive minis") around, you
may want to be prepared to take whatever action your ROE allows.

Let's see, a platoon is what, 2.5 pounds? Something like 16 platoons per
battalion? Call it about $180 in round figures for 3 battalions.

What you have to be careful of is playing DS2 with SG minis.... By the way,
DonM, did you ever run That Scenario for John?

Look, I'm using old Scotia minis for the powered armor I run in DSII. I can
put together a Skutatoi Company and an Engineer platoon. Or a Varangian
Company. I'd need a couple hundred more to do the scenario right. Or a couple
hundred dollars of Jon's NSL 6mm PA. Which I can't afford at this moment.
Individually or corporately? <evil grin>
Mounted separately, not Fire Teams... Yeah, that sounds good...
Darn you, there goes the budget! <grin>
