Ok yet more pics of 15mm paper models (let me know when your getting bored:)
This time some more early shots of:
Tanks - trying different turrets and a slightly smaller chassis
http://www.germy.co.uk/pictures/projects/tanks15mm.jpg
Simple Truck Design - this might end up being an APC but I'm having
trouble visualising how troops would get in and out of an APC with a hover
skirt?
http://www.germy.co.uk/pictures/projects/truck15mm.jpg
Very early Dropship design - probably an unpopular choice but I'm going
for a variation of the dropship from the film starship troopers
http://www.germy.co.uk/pictures/projects/dropship15mm.jpg
And just for more details on the dropship design and in case (for some strange
reason) people are interested in how I start making things here is my *ahem*
concept drawing for the dropship:)

As always comments welcome.
Cheers

skirt? There would be two obvious ways: 1) A back hatch that hinges DOWN to
cover the skirt with a ramp
2) If the APC can direct more force to the skirts and lift itself UP a foot or
two then armored troops could get out through a hatch in the bottom and allow
the APC to back up, advance or side slip to uncover them from a courching
position. This would be very useful for assaults INTO a compound for instance.

I like the faceted gunbarrels. From what I understand that is the direction
designs are headed, since cylindrical barrels make good radar targets.

Wow, great designs! Looks like the tank barrels are giving you some
trouble. The truck / apc is really nice. I'd be able to use it as is.
I've been doing a bit of paper model construction lately and very pleased with
the results. Here are a two of my favorite sites.

This fellow has done a number of models directly from the movie and they are
very good. I've done the APC and about to tackle the drop ship. These are
perfect for the Friekorp 15mm colonial marines. Also there is an amazing 1:1
pulse rifle (!) that I'd really like to do. The APC and other vehicles do need
to be rescaled as I think they're done at 1:144, so a bit of math here, but
the MkI eyeball works as well. If anyone would like the 15mm file as a.pdf get
me off list and I'll mail it to you. I'm on holiday next week so I may be slow
in getting back to you.

Have a couple of nice grav tank and apc made from three business cards. I've
done 3 of the tanks, painted and based, and am working on the 3 of the apc
now. Good models IMO. Find the tank at the url above and the apc in the
downloads section.

I suspect the cargo pod should be a bit smaller; it looks unbalanced,
and balance _matters_ on GEVs.
As for access, take a look at the back end of an M2 Bradley:

where the door doesn't really come down much lower than the top of the tracks.
Alternatively, borrow the "drachenzahntruppen" from 2300AD: their exit method
from a GEV APC was through an internal hatch into the plenum chamber, then lie
flat and wait for the APC to move off.

It may have been a lousy film but the design's not _all_ bad. A bit boxy
for settings that care about aerodynamics, though...

With the tank barrels I'm trying to avoid getting people to use drinking
straws. Although I might end up trying that.

Well I'm going to make the barrels smaller, I don't really want to make the
chassis any bigger because then we are getting into mega tank sizes.
> I suspect the cargo pod should be a bit smaller; it looks unbalanced,
True I'm going to need something with a lower profile to act as an APC.
> It may have been a lousy film but the design's not _all_ bad. A bit
I'm going to add a few more sloped edges to the design to make it less box
like but essentially the same as the film version.

Regular drinking straws as weapon barrels in 15mm would be HUGE - 18
inches or more across, roughly.
Folding small enough barrels to look 'realistic' might not be possible
w/
paper/cardstock... maybe design the models to use toothpicks or QTip
shafts as main-gun barrels? It does mean that people have to scrounge
additional supplies as well as print the paper parts out, but might be the
only way to get thin enough & strong enough barrels...

Perhaps plastic coffee stirrers might work?

Perhaps plastic coffee stirrers might work? I find there are plenty of
resources from straws, to toothpicks, to coffee stirrers, to bamboo skewers,
to wire coat hangers, to God knows what. I use the "bendy" straws like
hospital straws for the grav and hover tanks I modified from $! friction toy
tanks. I think the accordion folds in the gun "barrell" show a cooling sleeve.
To increase the illusion I used a thinner straw INSIDE the hospital straw and
caulked in the space between the inner and outer barrell. The result is
impressive.
