I recently managed to aquire some of the legendary Valiant Stardate 3000 lead
miniature starships, and I wondered of anybody had any pointers on painting
them.
I'm attempting to give them the "2001 Space Odyssey" look, the way the
Discovery and the Aries appeared.
Surely there is something I can do besides spray painting them flat white!
> Surely there is something I can do
White is one of the most difficult colors to get to look right on a miniature,
because almost any attempt at a wash discolors the entire area,
and drybrushing over an off-white color never seems to get a true white
brightness to it.
One method, which works for me, though it's also somewhat time consuming,
is to paint the entire figure white, and then use a diluted blue-grey
mix
and a small brush to do the creases/cracks. Capillary action will give
you
a hand - occasionally too much of a hand - so be prepared to do some
touch-ups. Recessed lines are the easiest to deal with, and raised
panels tend to be most difficult.
Hopefully this helps,
WHERE? Are there any left (or did you grab them all and run)!

Sorry, no more left. I had posted a plaintive note on
rec.games.miniatures.misc asking for Valiant starships, and one lonely soul
answered me. It was just one Perseus cruiser and a couple of Draco destroyers,
so you didn't miss much.
As is probably true with you, I will pay

Valiant is now owned by someone else. In the Midwest Wargames Association
Newsletter recently, I saw an ad for the Valiant range of
1/2000th sailing ships offered by a company called Division after
Division. The Games Quarterly gives their address as:
16710 Bradbe Road Fisherville, KY 40023 502 267 8146 after 6pm EST
Contact: Roger Dospil
Roger may be casting the line. If so he MAY have the molds for the Starships
and may not be aware of any interest in them.

Hi there!
They did exist, in fact I own some Scorpius and Pegasus subs. Has
anyone heard about the Minifigs re-release of the Stardate 3000 range?
A couple of years ago they announced in a newsletter they were going to but I
haven't heard anything since.

We contacted Valiant last Fall/Winter and they were planning to
re-release
their Stardate 3000 line this Spring after their production facilties moved
this Winter (ooops, reverse those seasons for those of you down under).
We
have been trying to contact them for months and have left numerous messages
but have not gotten a reply. When we know something, you will too.
I've got a couple of the 'subs'(*shudder*). Word of warning: the connection
from the front(nuke style bullet nose with sail and fins) to the back of the
fig is way thin. Mine has a nasty bend to it.
If I can find both I'll bring one to GenCon in case someone wants to swap for
another Valiant fig they have several of...

IIRC, those vessels were quite "dirty" looking. I would mix
up some off white using white with a little bit of brown and/or
black. Probably follow with a light, brown wash. Paint the highlights with
white, and finish by picking out the details and add any insignias, &c.
