I'd mentioned that I was going to try using a stiff bristled brush to "spray"
paint onto some 15mms to get a speckled look. Well, it kind of worked, in the
sense that paint got on the figures. However, the paint droplets are too
small, so the figs don't look speckled, just

I'm curious as to the brush, thickness of paint, and the difference in color
between the background and the paint sprayed.

I'd think that it would have to be fairly thick paint for the droplets to
hold, and the brush should be similar to a toothbrush. Lastly, difference
between shades rather than complimentary colors would tone down the speckle
effect.

However, 15mm is DARN small for the detailing, anyway. Neat idea, though.

I tried to do that once, too, and I never got the effect I wanted. I've been
thinking of using something like a plant sprayer or a perfume atomizer, but I
haven't picked one up yet.

The atomizer might produce to fine a spray. If you have an airbrush there
might be specialized tips for a splatter effect. I have several models and
the Aztek I mainly use has a specialized splatter tip - however I
haven't yet had call to use the one I purchased a while back so I can tell you
if it works or not.

The paint was, I think, a Ral Partha BattleTech black acrylic, going onto
khaki. The brush was pretty stiff, about like a new toothrush.

Well, actually it was 6mm--that almost matches the ground scale for SG,

OK, day-glo orange onto OD is the kind of contrast that might still
work, but black on khaki is better than the shades of green overlaid I was
envisioning. And, unthinned RP is probably as thick as you'd want, lest you'd
end up with little black 'bumps' to try and explain.
