Personnaly I would love to see this SST project come to fruition especially if
they use power armor. I was getting up Sunday mornings for
a while w/ my son to watch Beast Wars and was actually impressed with
the graphics and some of the story. There were several times where main
characters were killed off which made for fairly heavy scenes, something not
usually seen in kids programming.

i read in the foreword to "Eye", a collection of frank herbert's short
stories, that the shooting of the dune movie produced about six hours of
material, and that a mini-series was being mooted. this isn't the same
mini-series, surely? not over a decade later!

Remeber Reboot (the cartoon)?

Some of us went over to Jim Bell's for a game last week and CGI kids shows
were on like Shadow Raiders and Beast Wars. My friend immediately said,
"Don't you think they could do some great stuff with Morrison's stuff?"
He and I fell to discussing whether we'd rather see JLA or Doom Patrol (which
offered much stranger stuff). That said, those shows are approaching the point
where they could go mainstream. There's just too big an opening for animation
of all stripes on prime time, if it's aimed at adults.

Nope, there was a dune movie, I don't know any thing about it, exsept that it
is not the dune that Frank wrote.

Well the movie was directed(?) by David Lynch of Twin Peaks fame so it was a
little odd in spaces but that was OK too. They did make some changes to the
plot line (for instance the weapons in use were some sort of vocal amplifier
gun rather than sheer nasty knives). You have to watch it a couple of times to
start to like it but it is worth a watch. It got cut
severly due to the original length of the film (4-6 hours?) and parts of
it didn't make much sense after that. The talk I heard was that there might be
a "directors" cut of the film released. Theres been no sign of it yet though.
As for the mini-series well I had heard about it but as nothing more
than a rumour.
Tom spake thusly upon matters weighty:
All you have to do is realize they make cartoons like the Simpsons (for a
broad audience), Duckman (for mature adults with a quirky
sense of humor) and (I think it is called) the Head - a kind of
superhero TV with a bit of an adult bent. Oh, and of course, the show with the
greatest Hero the Galaxy has Ever Known, Captain Starr.

it's deeper than that. in the book, paul, as well as being a good
knife-fighter, has bene gesserit training, which allows him to control
and eventually kill by words alone.

major stuff that was cut: development of kynes' character (arguably the second
most important character in the book), why spice is important, relationship
between paul and his mentors, death of thufir hawat, and explanation of the
bene gesserit. they also cut paul's two romances, which is unusual for a
hollywood movie!

well, about 15 years ago it looked like there might possibly be a
mini-series one day. that probably doesn't mean much today.

Yje romances were cut LATE in post-production. Very late. I attended
the premier at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. The program we got
included four stills from the movie, one of which made it to the final
release... One of them was a scene between Paul and Chani (sigh).

I've heard as much as nine hours was produced. What was left over made a good
movie, but as has been said before, it wasn't Dune.
