G'day again,
One final question for the tank literate out there, in reading about the
Leopard 2A6 I saw it can fire sabot rounds at helicopters. I'm assuming that
most modern tanks can fire at helicopters right? I don't just mean missiles I
mean direct fire of sabot rounds (or is that the same thing and I've got
myself mixed up).
Cheers
I know the M1 does it as a regular training exercise at NTC......It was part
of the reason they didn't fix the SGT York ADA gun system, they found that the
fire control on the M1 could take down choppers.

Depends. I guarantee the Leopard can't fire at a crossing target, no
tank can rotate the turret that quickly. And for a head-on target or
a slowly moving helo, any modern tank (Challenger, Abrams, Leopard, possibly
LeClerc) can nail them. The Israeli Merkavas have killed choppers in Lebanon.

The US also has a top-attack 120mm round that has a secondary anti-helo
setting in which the round looks all around it rather than just down
and will fire a EFKP into the side/top/bottom of a target helocopter.
If you pay attention to TV shows about the Abrams from the last 5 years or so,
you can sometimes see the ammunition target selector as having 4
settings instead of 2: SABOT - STAFF GROUND - STAFF HELO - HEAT,
although they never mention it in the commentary.

Not all of us have that option. Some are limited to grunts,
cannon-cockers, and MPs. :)

Didn't say there was anything wrong with them, the ones I know just
aren't much help with info about US armor in the last 5-10 years or
so. Now If you have questions about fortifying your personal quarters against
VC mortar attack or keeping an eye out for 17 November operatives on your way
to work, they got lots to say:)
