I was recently looking through some old White Dwarfs when I came accross an
article that had some Plot and Sub Plot tables for Space Fleet Battles. I
thought they looked interesting and so I decided to try and convert them to
FT. However, I soon hit a problem in that the game they were designed for used
squares.
What I would realy like to know is can anybody remember how big the squares
were?
They were about 60 - 65mm IIRC. I remember drawing up some grids on art
board to extend our available playing area.

Try some of these sites for the text already typed in:
Aaron's Space Fleet Page -- look for "Advanced Rules" towards the bottom
of the page. (For a map discription, under Advanced rules, look for "New
Components")
Space Fleet Page -- Look for "Scenarios"

Other's have tried to answer, but, unless I missed something, the size of the
squares hardly mattered. I don't THINK there was any maneuver inside the
squares, so they were just 'squares'.
On the other hand, I don't think there was any indication of area the squares
represented in 'real' space (I get a particularly funny feeling using the word
'real' in any sci-fi or gaming discussion), so you end up just thinking
'big'.
Sorry, I know this is no help in conversion, but when talking games
granularity,
Space Fleet qualifies as seriously coarse. ;->=
STILL wish I'd gotten further in the Space Fleet/Epic campaign I worked
on, oh so many years ago...

Or did you mean how big they were compared to the average weapon ranges and
movement rates in the game?
Regards,
Glad to help!

Come to think of it...thank Aaron and the other fellow (they didn't
leave an e-mail addr on their page.)
They both did a lot of work typing up the info.
Thanks alot guys!

Donald Hosford wrote (BTW, please turn the formatting OFF! It is screwing the

This is Matthew Sprange's page, not Aaron's. The "Main Rules" and "Ships of
the Line" sections don't seem to work there, BTW.
Aaron's Space Fleet page can be found at:

If you look at Aaron's page, you'll find both his and my email
addresses :-/

You're welcome.
I didn't know who did the second page. Prankster clipped off the first URL
(Aaron's page). See my first response.
Thankyouyourwelcome.

BTW, the formatting isn't mine.

Well, since I didn't actually *see* anyone tell you how large the squares were
(though there were a few refs to my web site)....
I don't think the actualy size of the squares would matter, since a square is
a square is a square in that game, tho only one ship (barring Cobras) could
occupy a square at a time (???). Anyway. "Typical" gun ranges were up to 6
squares, with some up to 9 squares, so in my conversions I usually
called 6 squares equivalent to a "B" battery, er, class-2, which makes
one
square 4" on the side. If you call 6 squares the range of a class-3
gun, then you get 6" per side.
Hope this helps,
