Which strangely reminds me of a short story about AI cars that went renagade,
'Last of the Wild Ones' perhaps?

It's gone from a nice lawful "follow the straight and narrow" neutral to a
chaotic "maybe I'll go left, maybe I'll go right.. you never know" neutral.

Well, how about I change "neutral" to "first?" Would it make more sense
then? :)

Either way, though, it'll do it even if I'm just cruising along with the
clutch depressed.

Well, I'd suggest you put it in gear either way... You never get anywhere if
you're car's in neutral.
