I seem to recall a few pages on te FT webring that are located on Geocities.
If yours is, you might want to look at the SJ Games "Daily
Illuminator" for today -- http://www.sjgames.com/ill -- and follow the
link within, for your sake and for Mr.Tuffley's. Basically, the new TOS for
Geocities pages gives Yahoo the right to use any content on your pages,
ROYALTY-FREE, forever. This has several permutations, but Steve Jackson
explains them beter than I do. Take a look, though. Especially if you have any
official GZG stuff upon your site.
Interesting situation
As SJ says don't panic yet - watch this space. AFAIK most stuff
is unofficial anyway, the FAQ is just a synthesis of posts to the mailing list
and my stuff is copyleft in general.
Yahoo looks like they are just about to blow their foot off with this, sort of
like the great Paramount Star Trek web purge debacle. There a currently reams
more free pages available without this sort of spamming.

I totally agree with your sentiments, but its a right royal pain setting it
all up somewhere else - broken links and cross references, it is a web
and untangling it all is grief I can do without.
A web-site URL is for life not just for Christmas.
We should at least fight before running... Ortillery target Yahoo corporate

As of a few minutes ago (3 PM Pacific time), the following is posted as the
infamous "Section 8" portion of the Yahoo Terms of Service page:
8. CONTENT SUBMITTED TO YAHOO
Yahoo does not own Content you submit, unless we specifically tell you
otherwise before you submit it. You license the Content to Yahoo as set forth
below for the purpose of displaying and distributing such Content on our
network of properties and for the promotion and marketing of our services. By
submitting Content to any Yahoo property, you automatically grant, or warrant
that the owner of such Content has expressly granted,
Yahoo the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully
sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish,
translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display
such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in
other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed.
You
acknowledge that Yahoo does not pre-screen Content, but that Yahoo and
its designees shall have the right (but not the obligation) in their sole
discretion to refuse, edit, move or remove any Content that is publicly
available via the Service. Without limiting the foregoing, Yahoo and its
designees shall have the right to remove any Content that violates the TOS or
is otherwise objectionable. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all
risks associated with, the use of any Content, including any reliance on the
accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such Content. In this regard, you
acknowledge that you may not rely on any Content created by Yahoo or submitted
to Yahoo, including without limitation information in Yahoo! Message Boards,
Yahoo! Clubs, and in all other parts of the Service.
There are still a number of problems with this new version, specifically:
They can still sublicense your content. They can still translate your content.
They can still create derivative works from your content. They can still
incorporate your content into any form, media or technology now known or later
developed. The BIG change here are the first two sentences:
"Yahoo does not own Content you submit, unless we specifically tell you
otherwise before you submit it. You license the Content to Yahoo as set forth
below for the purpose of displaying and distributing such Content on our
network of properties and for the promotion and marketing of our services."
All told, this is a small step in the right direction!
-------- End Quote ---------
IMHO this is still not enough. The licence granted to Yahoo/Geocities
should be limited to posting on GeoCities. Period! Any other use should
require the
express written permission of the author/designer.

As the only site I still host on GeoCities is my Star Trek that could be very
interesting...

i agree (mind you, my and the list's websites are on Xoom, one of the biggest
and least flexible providers). plus, geocities mangle your html,
put pop-up banner windows in and have that accursed floating watermark
whatsit.

well, in the interests of humanity (and this list in particular), i'd be happy
to help with this sort of thing for anyone who wants to move providers.
generally, good design principles result in a highly portable site, and where
there are problems (eg with absolute URLs), the appropriate spells (often
involving 'grep') will usually soothe the pain.

Pain?? Who cares about pain? As of now, the NCS has been removed from
GeoCities. I need to update it to FB standards anyway.
Now, who can recommend a better free host??
Thanks in advance

I know its a pain for some of you to transfer sites. Mine isnt that big, so
for me its not really a problem. Sadly, I fear that this will cause quite an
upheavel in the free hosting business. I've already seen a huge list of folk
who have left GeoCities over this.
Any thoughts on a better host??
I like Homestead. They give you 12mb of space and have a very basic TOS. In
addition they have features on the sites that allow anything from Chat rooms
to emails lists. Plus the site setup is almost too easy. It features a drag
and drop interface. Try it it's worth it.

For a list of free web space providers check out
http://www.thefreesite.com
This has loads of free things to do with web site design and hosting.

Jim you can look at <http://www.crosswinds.net> where I have my site.
It may be a bit slow but they offer unlimited free disk space.
Enjoy,

www.homestead.com seems to have a lot to offer, including drag-and-drop
page designer, a very relaxed usage agreement, and (IIRC) 12 meg of space. I
haven't used it a lot ("free time"? my time is expensive) but what I've seen
looks good.
