Help please! I am thinking of laying in some earthquake supplies, and would
like to know the MRE that has the best taste. Would those who have knowledge
in this area make suggestions, and please keep in mind that a small child
might have to eat from the MRE.

Please respond directly to me.

Thank you,

Two options:

1. Buy a case and just be brave. 2. Eat the small child:) 3. Get a case of
Vegetarian MREs (Yes, they do exist)

I've never eaten an MRE, but have studied them for military purposes. Some
points:

1. Get the latest block (21) which has 24 different meals. Previous versions
had 12 (original), then 16. 2. They're best eaten within 6 months. 3. If you
must store them for longer, do so at a constant 50 F temperature, then the
flavour's good for at least 3 years.
4. They don't spoil after they're time-expired, but the taste goes away.
5. The old "Chicken a la King" aka "Chicken a la Dead" of Desert Storm
Infamy has been completely re-formulated, and is now top of the
popularity stakes rather than bottom.

If you have access to Jane's Defence weekly they had a very good set of
articles on the MREs, their advantages and disadvantages.

Surelt you meant 1,300 and not 13,000 - that would lead to overwwight
soldiers real-quick ;->

Having eaten more than my fair share of these things I would recommend staying
away from the omelette and chunk o'ham meals. The chicken and beef stew are
the most popular here in Korea. And watch out for the oatmeal cookie cube, it
tastes pretty good but you wont need to go to the bathroom for the next three
days(unless you than eat the brownie). Most of the items are edible and really
depends on personal taste. After 3 days of nothing but MREs your body starts
doing weird things and nobody likes to be around each other much. Oh yeah. IF
you eat everything in the pack it is 3000 calories. NOTE: save the heater
elements. you can make nifty little bomb devices out of them. we plan on
throwing a couple hundred into the local swimming pool. Wonder if magnesium
and chlorine react?

Ah, yes. The infamous MRE bombs. Legend has it that two years ago, some guys
from my unit (including our XO, the incomprable 1LT Gordon Cjaka, from whom I
bought about 200 modern microarmor minis for $50 'coz
he just didn't want them anymore. Ex-enlisted, and a SPC's sense of
humor) made an MRE bomb out of a 5 gallon can and about 20 or so heaters. When
they set it off, range control called up and asked why they were setting off
demo!
