Hello all: Well, I've done something I haven't done in a long time: I've sat
up the entire night playing a computer game. That game is Independence War:
Deluxe Edition. This is by far the most "realistic" space combat simulator I
have every had the pleasure of playing. I only just got the game this
afternoon, and I'm still working out all the game's nuances (control the
multiple stations at once can be a little confusing), but so far I am REALLY
impressed.
I wonder if any enterprising wargaming company's would like to purchase the
rights to produce IW minis. I would LOVE to have my own fleet of Indy
Corvettes. The "graffiti" paint jobs for the ships would be interesting and
challenging to say the least.

This game is totally cool! The realism is solid enough to walk on, the
storyline is compelling, the puzzles are facinating!
The games says "starship in a box", and they ain't kidding. You really *feel*
like you are piloting a huge starship.
The frosting on the cake is the scripting. Did you realize that the actual
game is just a script engine, and all the scenarios are merely scripts? At the
official web site you can download a package that allows you to make your own
scripts (although this is not for the faint of heart) You can also change the
appearance of the ships if you have something that can model Lightwave.dfx
files.

(What attracted me was that you can also
edit the 3-D rotating starmap)
There are a lot of fan sites that actually have new scenarios and new ship
images.

They also have hints on play and combat tactics.

I agree with you there, Mark. Now if they'd just add network support, it would
be the best game of all time. Think of it. Have one person per ship position
over a network. =)
If Iwar2 comes out by GZGECC2 it might be neat to run a LAN Iwar2 simulator so
some guys could do that when they need a break from gaming.

Well, from what I've heard, they are going to put a multi-player
option in Independence War 2. One function I would like to see is the ability
to edit your ship skins. I would love to come up with my own Indy paint job.
I'm would like to work out some IDW conversions for FT despite the sad lack of
minis. Some ideas are pretty obvious.
Movement: Vector movement only.
PBC: Standard Beam weapons:
Shields: Standard Screens,
Missiles: MT Type rather than SMB.
Seekers: Standard Missiles Disruptors: ECM Missiles
Other ideas that we need some work on: LDS, LDSI missiles, ECM flares.

You can edit the ship skins. It's just a pain in the butt to do.
First you need the script editing package from the offical web site.
When you play normally, all the game data is compressed

Only you would say that, you know.

It's been a while since I've played it--I got stuck on one mission and
got frustrated. The one where you have to play Radio Direction
Finder--I've tried it several times, and when I don't die from passing
aliens, it takes forever--literally over an hour--to never-quite-find
the beacon I'm supposed to be locating. What obvious course of action am I
utterly overlooking?

Aliens? They are aliens in this game???
Awwwww... Come on Mike! Talk to your bosses! Don't they realize there
this market for I-War minis? (OK, a very small market.) I want my
Dreadnaughts and PatComs and even the Puffin class tugs....
plllleeeeeeaaaaaaasssse!
Don't make me beg.
LOL..well, they are French so it may take some doing...
