My sheet's not clean, but I will say this every time John Atkinson feels
the need to mouth off we see a valued list member unsubscribe in disgust as a
result. This is not a once off but a regular occurrence and Jeremey Claridge
isn't the first causality to John's "piss and wind".
Even accounting for John's apology (with it's exclusion of Imre) I think
it's time we said goodbye to John. Yes, I'm asking for John to be booted
off the list, because I'm more interested in listening to what the people who
unsubscribed have to say than John's posturing, chest thumping and abuse of
others.
John get a life and stop paying for it.

Removing people from lists is never a good precedent to set. It always (in my
experience) leads to more such requests. In increasingly swift sequence...
can't...help...myself...must...reply... :)
1) John's a bright guy whose opinions I value as much as anyone else's even
with his occasional flamingly idiotic rants regarding crap I care nothing
about. 2) Don't "boot" anybody because of their opinion, however idiotic or
distasteful. Free speech is ugly, but fascism is worse.
3) I have a policy that when my unread messages reaches 300, "edit ->
select all; edit -> delete all messages" (actually it's ctrl-a; del but
you know what I mean) 4) Jeremy, don't go, I appreciate the frustration, but I
have always looked forward to the lates germy update and esp. the paper
buildings. I
will never remember to look if you don't keep poking me with that sharp stick.
5) Irrelevance and extremism are brother and sister to brilliance and
eccentricism (whatever the hell that means!) 6) there is no number 6
7) lighten up, all-y'all. I don't even know 99.95% of you, and with a
few specific exceptions, I really don't care what you think of me. 8) (will
this guy never shut up? god, 8 bullet points and there's no sign of him
stopping) Even the flamingly idiotic rants regarding crap I care nothing about
from this list are intelligent and interesting.

My only concern about this is the problem of "censorship through yelling". In
other words, the one who yells the loudest is the most heard. Those who don't
feel like yelling leave.
At what point is one person's "ugly" free speech worth more than the speech of
those who were silenced because they left in disgust. At what point does the
list die from one person's rants because a critical mass of people left?
Hopefully this will end up being a tempest in a teacup and things will float
back to normal. I just wonder how many potentially interesting people are
being steered away from this list due to all the noise, or the loudness of
that noise...
