That and further back. I think Alan Varney did a defense of RPG'ing closer to
twenty years ago that included the positive socializing effects, including his
use with church groups. You may recall that, back then, D&D supposedly led to
cult activities and psychotic behavior.
I think that was in Fantasy Gamer; there were plenty of other mag articles.
Alas, many of the magazines themselves are only memories.
However, it was only later that everybody seemed to mention the whole
sanitation issue...

Fantasy Gamer had an issue dedicated to sanitation?!

Inspite of having been a bit guilty myself on occasion, I have to admit being
on the side of wishing FERVENTLY they had...

How interesting. My first positive exposure to RPG's was hanging out with a
bunch of guys from my church, They and their wives were all involved in the
Children's Ministry. We'd meet every Tuesday, talk about how life was going
for everyone, pray for each other, and then start bashing badguys' heads. We
played Star Wars D6 and Champions (If you want an RPG that will REALLY hone
your math skills, I highly recommend that one!). That was back in San Diego,
and I've yet to find another gaming experience quite as rewarding.

Piffle. Try Rolemaster from Iron Crown Enterprises (the same ones who used to
produce Silent Death, before they went bankrupt) if you want math. Champions
only uses math in the character design phase.

Ummmm.... if the only time you used math in Champions was in CharGen, you
didn't play the same Champions I did, or at least not the same genre
(superheroes). OCV vs ECV, variable point pools, multitools, damage reduction,
Stun Vs Body damage (handled differently for standard and Killing attacks),
Stun modifiers.... Plenty of math......

twice a week for several years, actually, and GM'ing a Fantasy Hero campaign
now. A little arithmetic here and there but not enough to improve even on my
son's math, more's the pity.

How I envy you, I miss my Champions days. Never played Fantasy Hero, always
played High Powered Superhero campaigns, where there was plenty of math.

Um, Laserlight?
You *do* know that ICE has been (appearently successfully) reconstructed, and
that Silent Death with all of its supplements and miniatures is back in
production, don't you...?

Ah, RuleMonster. I'm involved in two (related) fantasy RPG campaigns with the
Rolemaster system right now. Happily, the GM & one of the other players know
the system extremely well, so the rest of us leave the math to them & just get
on with the roleplaying.
It's still a math heavy system, even then...

My group tried to play this once, after one member got excited and bought the
rulebook.
After about three hours of collectively trying to make up characters and
realizing that we weren't even close to being finished, we gave up.
Never tried it again.
