FYI:
The way the CBC reported things, the US Women's Team put the Canadian Flag on
their locker room floor in order to remind them who they were there to beat
and who was hot on their heels. Supposedly they (out of respect) did not walk
on it. It just occupied floorspace. And the Canadian comment after the Gold
was a good rejoinder "The Americans had our flag on their dressing room floor,
now I want to know if they want us to sign it?".
I'm sure it was all in the spirit of preparing for competition, but in
this case it may have served to fire up the Canadian team - perhaps a
backfire of sorts.

PS - Congratulations are indeed in order to Germany, although if they
didn't win Hockey or Curling, they really just got Consolation Prizes.
<*heh*>
PPS - Lots of respect for Norway for beating the Canadian Men in Curling
(in the 10th end and it all came down to the last rock) and to Scotland (they
call them Gr. Britain, but they were all Scottish lasses) for beating the
Canadian Women in Curling to bring the Gold home to the birthplace of Curling.
PPPS - A big raspberry to the Russians who doped and to the government
who seems to be acting like a petulant 5-year old.... ("I'm taking my
stuff and going home!"). If you cheat, and get caught, you should be turfed.
End of story. It applied to Canada (Ben Johnson comes to mind) and it should
apply to any other nation. Win fair or lose fair... I respect either. Cheating
is beneath contempt.

Still doesn't sound good. As an American, I know how I'd feel if someone did
that to Old Glory, we should show the same respect to other nations'
flags. If it's true, we should apologize.

Personally, I'm glad Canada won, especially the men -- they wanted it
more, it means more to them, they fought hard and earned it. Congratulations.
At
leeast we lost to the best team in the world and noone else - not even
no
Belarus ;-)
Ihe end, we had to be pleased with our showing, considering that the US is
usually NOT a winter power. The sledding contingient particularly did us
proud.

You mean frozen shuffleboard? ;-)

Both very exciting matches - I've actually grown to understand and enjoy
Curling (the US broadcasters were smart enough to use Canadian commentators).
> PPPS - A big raspberry to the Russians who doped and to the government
Amen to that. And may I also say to Canada congratulations for producing
someone as outstandingly drop dead gorgeous as Jamie Sale. Woo Hoo.

IMO, it's still a disrepectful way to treat a flag. But then, as an MP I
participated in flag call lots of times, often on holidays (when the

*sigh* Yeah... As much has been said by the papers I've read since the US
women's team lost...

Yeah... What were they thinking... duh...

All in one's PoV I expect. So how are Canadian Baseball teams going to do this
year <grin>?

Curls you hair to think of it!
> PPPS - A big raspberry to the Russians who doped and to the government
Totally agreed. I translate the IOC response as "Whatever, if you want to not
compete, that's your business... We'll still be here... as will the rules and
the tests..."
Gracias,
Canada can have both hockey medals, they earned them on the ice.
And I'd also like to mention that Russian complaints that their athletes
were disproportionatly picked for "random" drug testing sound hollow when so
many of those athletes *failed* said tests.
The Russian whining after Hughes won her gold medal did sound pro forma,
unless they think that losing your balance on an easier program earns you more
points than a more difficult program executed flawlessly.

Ah, you have to understand Anglo-Celtic sport relations. In English eyes
if an England wins its a great English triumph, if a Scottish team wins, its a
great British triumph. Mind you the Scots are worse, at football they cheer on
anyone (even the French) who are playing England. To be fair Britain competes
as Britain in the Olympics, not as the individual countries (England,
Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) of the UK in contrast to football. In
rugby, it's different again as Ireland competes as Ireland (North & South
combined) except where the whole of Britain and Ireland forms a single team in
an effort to beat the Ozzies an Zeelanders proving that though we hate each
other, we hate everyone else more. John PS I speak as a Cornishman, the Celtic
county of England, and hence unbiased (or biased against everyone equally).
Traditionally the rulers in London used as his shock troops as we were the
only group he could trust
not to knife him (a Cornish Monarch/Emperor was unthinkable to all
sides). The only British troops in the Roman Army in Britain were a unit of
Cornovi who manned the Great Wall.

I thought it was "When you win, it is 'Another Triumph for Great Britain';
when you don't it's 'England Loses Again'"...? <g>
(At this point I expect Jon T. to burst out singing "The English, the English,
the English are..." <G>)

Which is also a better way of stating it, "A Great British Triumph" sounds
like someone praising a sports car. ;-)
