A film of possible interest to wargaming buffs: Enemy at the Gates is
scheduled to be released in the US on March 16. Many may recognize the title
from William Craig's excellent historical narrative of the seige of Stalingrad
(the book was one of the sources for the original Squad Leader.) The movie is
set in the midst of that bloody campaign, but apparently focuses almost
entirely on the sniper duel recounted in the book.
Production values look excellent (shot entirely in Germany, $95M budget),
casting also high caliber (Ed Harris, Jude Law, and Bob Hoskins as Nikita
Kruschev)... however initial reviews have been mixed following the film's
premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
I'm looking forward to it all the same. Have any of the European GZGers had a
chance to see this?
This must be on topic, I saw the trailer during Babylon 5 last night. Which
you can see here:

Which strikes me as a bit funny, because I read War of the Rats recently and
was thinking it'd make a good movie. For once Hollywood agreed.

D'oh! I just posted about it, but you beat me to it! I'm looking forward to
it...
would this be related to the story IIRC (not sure of the spelling) of "Krunig"
and "Zitezev"??
[quoted original message omitted]
If I stumble accross my copy of War of the Rats between now and March 16 I'll
post it.

Judging from what I remember reading about the movie, yes. Those names sound
about right. (I think the German's name was Konig.)

Having watched the trailer (joy of cable! <grin>) I must say that it starts
out looking good, and they they appear to go all... gooey. If it's based on a
true story (is it?) then it's must be very loosely based.
Trust Hollywood to put a love story into Stalingrad...

Hello All,
Looks like it will be a good movie. The Russian Sniper is Vasily Zaitsev and
the German is Major Konig (or Major Konings in some references). Some good
stuff on the web about Zaitsev. Do a search with his full name.

Hello Jeremy,
Not only is it based on a true story but Hollywood *did not* add
the love story. It is real as well. What is questioned is the duel itself.
So in that way, yes it must be loosely based on the true story :-)
Check out this web site for the basics, they do a good "real story" treatment:

While definitely a point, Hollywood has to aim the movie at a wider audience
in order to recoup its money. To be honest, I think it can work. Note, I said
I THINK it can work... :-)

Seen the trailer and even with the obvious artistic license applied it still
looks to be a nice way to waste a few hours, if there's nothing better to do.
