Okay, this is a little off topic..
after watching the first two tapes of "Martian Successor Nadesico", which has
just been released in australia, I saw that the opening scene of the first
episode was a rather cool major fleet battle. Essentially, a big
julip-shaped black thing from beyond jupiter (sounds 1920s sci-fi-ish, I
know, but its cool) headed towards the terran conlony and terraforming
projects on Mars. The Terran fleet is deployed to try and stop it. The First
Fleet hold their fire until the enemy comes within targeting range. The Julip
reinforces itself by opening up and disgorging about a dozen battleships and
several thousand fighter craft. Both fleets fire their main weapons at the
same time. The Terran beams bounce off the Jovian distortion
fields, but the Jovian beams find their mark. About 1/2 second after the
beams cut off, about 90% of the terran fleet explodes. Anti-ship fire
also bounces straight off the Joivan fightercrafts' distortion fields. Admiral
Fukube decideds to eject the bridge unit of his command vessel (something like
a BDN) and ram the Julip with the rest of the ship. He only succeds in
changing its course, and the juilp smacks out the main charcter's colony, and
hence the story starts.
Overall, its a very cool fleet battle, with lots of big anime-style
laser fire and explosions.
I often think of anime when I am playing my games in full thrust, to help
imagine what the ship is actually doing...
Can you guys think of any other animes that are good for drawing inspiriation
from?

About halfway through the book, there's a good account of an ambush (which was
expected).
3 Guardships (translation: DeathStar equivalent) went in, only 1 1/2
came out. I really want to do this as a scenario, but the attacker would get
disheartened after the first 10,000 points was blown away...

The rest of the list will have tired of me pointing it out, but Jon mentions
Legends of Galactic Heroes in the back of FTII. It's not available
commercially in English; you can only find it fan-subbed in the US,
though occasional Japanese DVD's filter in.
HUGE battles, subtle politics, though more than a bit talky, which I don't
mind; I've just heard others complain. And, a plus to this curmudgeon, no
mecha.

I've never been able to find the anime, but Legend of Galactic Heroes is
supposed to have some of the best.
It's all about fleet engagements.

I've got the first episode, with subtitles in realplayer format (35
meg).
Had it go going in the background when Beth and I were playtesting some MT
missile stuff for the testlist:)
Starblazers comes to mind...the complete series (all 3 seasons) are available
from "Suncoast" (here in the US).
To get all 3 seasons...be prepaired to pay dearly...I did...
(The 3rd season had seen limited release. I found it quite interesting.)

Well, the Imperial fighters have long weapons that swing in a manner that
suggests arms, if you squint REAL tight...

Oh, that's just wrong! And *I'M* called a dirty old man!
By the way, the good stuff is referred to as 'hentai'...
It's been awhile, but I think Lensman has some smaller battles. Also, I do
remember seeing a bit of anime that had HUGE battles, rendered in almost ink
line drawings, but I didn't catch the name. Maybe Votoms? I think it was very
late in one of the mecha series.
Definitely wouldn't be the first time I missed something really good because
of a small personal peeve.

'Humor, what a concept.'
It's supposed to be ironic; yes, explicit, which would make my knowing it
indicative of BEING a dom.
However, to my shame and chagrin, I've never actually seen any, just some
suggestive stills...

I used to be fairly anti-mecha; the DP9 Heavy Gear stuff converted me.
Not only is it fairly 'hard science' (yes, that's loosely applied for mecha)
but the figures are widely available - there aren't enough
15mm-compatible
SFish vehicles out there to be avoiding walky things...

The Australian release of Nadesico has only 6 tapes. I think theyre
realasing them with the same episode-per-tape content of the DVDs, which
is
great...
