I'm taking two weeks of leave in Europe starting the middle of next week and
am looking for some advice on gamer specific sights to see and some good game
stores to stop at in England.
I'm looking to buy some lead while I'm in England and check out any
conventions that might be there. Could someone suggest a game store or two to
stop by? I'm looking to pick up some Peter Pig figs, some QRF vehicles, some
vehicles from Skytrex, and I'd love to be able to find some LaserBurn minis
from Tabletop Games. I'll be in England from the 6th to the 9th of Feburary.
I'm also looking for advice on military museums and any other sights a
GZG-oriented traveller would enjoy, in:
Prague - 31 Jan
Berlin - 01 Feb
Amsterdam - 03 Feb
Paris - 04/05 Feb
England - 06/09 Feb
Pisa, Rome - 10/12 Feb
Thanks, Ted

Sadly, I don't think you'll find any of these in stores over here. Like us,
they all tend to trade mailorder and at conventions - there are VERY few
independant (ie non-GW) game store left in the UK, and those that are
around deal much more with RPGs and F&SF figures than historicals. It's a
real shame you are leaving on the 9th - on Feb 10th, there is Fantasy
Partizan in Newark, Notts - a show that would have been WELL worth you
visiting... :-(
On a brighter note, you're welcome to call in on us if you're in this part of
the country!

Someone already mentioned the Imperial War Museum, in London. If you're
interested, check out:
http://www.iwm.org.uk/
As a North American who has had the pleasure of visiting this place, I'll
say that if you're interested in things-military, it is one of the best
museums of it's kind I've ever seen. The quality of the exhibits is great
- well worth the visit.
Their website shows the various locations in England that this museum has
sites, and has very complete directions for the London (main) branch.

Rome -
Well, the Colleseum, of course... FMA-ancients...??? :)
I'm not Catholic, and this most certainly has little to do with things
GZG-like, but the Vatican is worth the visit. Truly spectacular.
I didn't see anything *modern* and military/GZG-ish while I was in
Italy...

Thanks Jon, Adrian, Karl, and John for the travel advice!
Jon - How big is the Fantasy Partizan? Can I play in some games there?
Will there be a lot of dealers? Is there a website for it? How far and what
direction is it from London? I'm trying to gauge if it's worth rearranging my
travel...
I will try to stop in and say, "hello." What's the best way to get to your
shop from London? Hire a car? Take a train?

It is well worth a visit and usually has plenty of participation games and
trade stands to keep you occupied all day.

hope this helps

Not _BIG_ in terms of US shows like GenCon, but a decent-sized show for
the UK. I'd guess around 5-600 paying punters, 30+ traders and 20+
games.

Yes. There are always plenty of good participation games, more than you could
play in a day.

I think Paul covered this one as far as the train goes. Newark is
probably 2 1/2 hours from London by car (I'm around 30 miles SE of
London and allow 3 hours for the journey - plus a breakfast stop, of
course!).

An important point is that Fantasy Partizan, as the name suggests, is
PRIMARILY a Fantasy and SF gaming show - thus MOST (though not all) of
the traders are F&SF orientated, rather than the broader mix at most general
shows. You'll find virtually everyone who produces F&SF gaming stuff in the UK
will be there, but you won't find the hardcore historical companies.
