Hello All: OK, without going it yet another debate over the movie, can someone
give me a quick rundown of Avalon Hill's ST game. I'm thinking of picking it
up. Does anyone reccomend it?
WHich one, the original or latest game? The original is highly recommended.
Hidden plotting and movement for the bug forces. EXCellent hive construction
rules. Three types of bugs, soldiers, workers and HW platforms. MI has all the
standard types plus engineers, psychics and dogs. You get a platoon
organization pad where you mark down what guys are in your platoon and what
they're carrying. units are individual troopers (with counters for nukes,
demos nerve gas etc etc), rules for drops and retrieval ships. There are
levels of casualties and an important part of the game is lugging your wounded
out of trouble. There are subterranean rules. Uses an FP odds based combat
results table.
Each turn is a few minutes each hex is a kilometer (or mile) You can pick this
game up in the bargain bin f lots of hobby stores. Coverts well to minis.
AGAIN, I AM TALKING ABOUT THE ORIGINAL GAME NOT THE ONE THAT CAME OUT LAST
YEAR OR TWO.

Also, the original game included the Skinnies. These were above-ground
forces that first fought against the MI in the early scenarios and then fought
alongside the MI in the later scenarios. They had warriors, workers, and two
types of HW platforms. One was a beam armed tank and the other was a mobile
missile launcher. The skinnies also had fortifications.

The copy I have (old, based on book, not movie I refused to go see) I gave to
a fellow fanatic as a gift. YES, I recommend it (and I don't usually play
board games anymore...)
A run-down, well I leave for work soon (it's 527 AM) but if no one else
does first, I'll give it a try. Be aware it will be based on my 'delete before
reading' memory. 8^)

Gracias.

Dwarf, 1500-1700 North America Skirmishes.
I own, but haven't played, the movie tie-in. Relatively small map and
large hexes, scuttlebutt makes this a fast, simple skirmish game. The stand up
pieces are picture images from the movie, on clear, soft plastic.
Looks fun and quick, I should be able to talk someone into a game this
weekend, and send a private AAR to you, Mark.

mark, laserlight was right. the original SST (not movie version) heavily
favored the MI. other than that, the game is cool because of the elements
mentioned so far. if you are gonna go for it, tho, i would recommend trying to
get the supplements from the General. the best resource is the Web Grognards
page (www.grognards.com???). this lists all the General
issues that had add-ons. a search on Dogpile (www.dogpile.com) provides
some more goodies.
you will definitely need to modify the bugs so they are more playable, like
reproducing more warriors during the battle. i would also consider adding the
tanker, hopper, etc bugs from the movie and anime series as well.
heck, you got me interested again! if you find some good stuff, let me know. i
will probably buy it too.
