I thought I'd brought up Norstrilla(I'm pretty certain the proper spelling)
in the midst of one of the paeans to OZ. ;->=
Interestingly, I haven't read it, but have heard enough to know of Stroon. I'd
read the 'Kittuns', but it's been so long I've quite forgotten most. However,
no need for anyone to post the specifics (If you must, you ARE familiar with
spoiler space, right?); I'd rather find it myself.
I'd assume that chemistry would have advanced sufficiently that an artificial
substitute could be found. I still think the undefinable flavor qualities of
Betelguesian Pork might have that kind of price, though.
I've seen websites with whinging about the relatively small amount of material
from which to build a gaming universe, too. An engaging place to struggle, it
seems.

I'm a big Cordwainer Smith fan, and have been for decades. He's a brilliant
writer, with a very lyrical prose style. Mom has my big anthology right now:
The Rediscovery of Man (ISBN 0915368560, Nesfa Press 1993). This is ranked
very highly over at Amazon (5 star average on 33 reviews, ranked 30,720
overall in sales). Get a copy if you value literature in SF.
That said, Stroon is an immortality drug. It comes from sick sheep. Very sick
sheep. Bloody enormous sick sheep on the planet Norstrillia. To steal a sheep
would require getting a very large transport down to the surface and then back
up. And that after getting through the psionic
defences - which assumes the system defences of the richest planet in
the galaxy didn't stop you first.
I'd want a big fleet for that.

You buy them books, you buy them books, and all they do is eat the bloody
covers... *sigh*
Ignoring the second part of your note...

Or, you could buy it and Norstilia (boy, was I off) from the web site
maintained by his daughter, and get $5 off. Natch, you'll learn at lot more
about him and his work there than we could, OR should be bringing up on this
list:

Why does it need to be humans rescueing livestock? Couldn't it be the Kr'vak
(sp?) herding their human cattle away on a capture
mission. :)
By all means, buy the books from a relative rather than Amazon.
But whatever the source, these are 5-star stories.
