A quick survey: How many folks routinely, deliberately leave wasted space in
commonly used vehicles/ships in DS/FT, other than in obvious

Usually the debate centers around how much junk you can cram into hull size of
X, or vehicle size of Y, without a shred of extra space, but oftentimes, the
vehicles/ships used in the past have been seriously non-optimal. I'm
just
wondering if folks tend to model certain cultures/nations (whether
official or
not) as being more or less sloppy, or do most people play/design to
reflect
that every ship/vehicle engineer _inside_ the game get the _game_
optimization right when they build 'em?

Re: the Survey,

Personally, I look at the model and build the design factors around what
it might carry/ be armed with and what role it will play. Custom built
is different. This is where I cram - value for money!!

You too? I tend to go for what I think it would carry rather than what will
maximise its effectiveness. I guess that's why I lose lots of the GW games
i play. I don't min-max enough! ;-)

In FT, I usually use all available space for systems unless the ship needs to
haul cargo. Sometimes I will build a ship by selecting systems I want to use
first, then determine the minimum hull size to carry them. This makes it
easier to model a particular ship or genre. Allowing excess space to account
for certain ship designs is not a bad idea though.

I generally follow the figure, so if it only has a forward gun, i do leave
waste space. In FT this is not a probelm as you generally have 50% wastage
(more if civillian), so you can get away with a lot (as per the DSII rules in
MT)

Most moder naval vessels will have a reserve amount of

the lack of such is a problem. The USN Oliver Hazard Perry class of FFGs have
around 50 tons of reserve space.
