Hello all:

I got a whole mess of DSII minis (AFVs and infantry mainly) at last years
GenCon, and I'm finally getting around to painting them. Since I'm in need
some ideas, I was curious as to how all you Groupos out there in GZG Mailing
List Land paint your DSII forces?

Spray. Cut some slits in a 3x5 card and use it as a mask. Turn to vary

pattern.

Well, I've got a mercenary armor unit that's colors are black with
orange-red
tiger stripes, the reverse of an actual tiger. I've also got one force of
low-tech armor (WWII armored cars, bren carriers, shermans, and some
modern tanks) in a desert tan, and one other force (big hovertanks, large
tracked tanks, smaller tank destroyers, and epic imperial guard sentinal
walkers) in almost a WWII marine mottle green & brown. Not to mention the
Renegade Legion grav tanks and Battletech elementals i have in grey & white.
It's SF, and you can give them whatever paintjob that looks good to you.

Decide what type of terrain they are most likely to encounter. Then choose a
camo pattern that fits. I have a group that was based on the Moon and so
used a Black/Grey camo for one group and a Multi-Grey Spot camo for
another. I have some pictures of the first set at
http://members.xoom.com/rlyehable/ds2/ Although the minis are hard to
see, you can see the terrain that they were used on under the 'Moonbase Xi'
portion of the GZG-ECC picture pages: GZG-ECC II
(http://people.canoe.ca/jhan/ft/gzgecc/gzgecc2/frames/gallery_fri_frame.
html
), GZG_ECC III
(http://people.canoe.ca/jhan/ft/gzgecc/gzgecc3/gallery.html).

Or you can paint them in 'Parade Colors' which allows you do do anything you
want.

If you have enough other players that you will only need to paint your force,
then you are fine with one paint scheme. If, like me, it is harder to find
people to play against, you may want to divide your forces and choose two
paint schemes (one for each side) to paint them.

(The Independent Antarctic States forces mostly fight on ice rather than the
ground. So instead of being ground
pounders--gropos--are they actually ice pounders--pronouced
"ickypoos"?)

Alarishi panzers are set for fighting in an airless environment, by the light
of an M star and a brown dwarf. So they're black, red, and light grey. The
problem with camo is that you're doing your best to make the tank look like a
nondescript blob that fades into the background. I'm thinking of making my
next batch a medium grey with dark red tiger stripes; the camo won't be as
effective as on the current batch, but I think they may look better. Besides a
chameleon skin for your tanks is pretty much a requirement for warfare in
2180, so you can paint them display colors if you like.

I'm painting up a bunch of Ogre miniatures right now, and I've settled on a
REALLY easy camo scheme. It's not all that realistic, but it looks good.

Dark green base coat, dry brush it with a slightly lighter green. Paint
large splotches of a light gray-green at the corners and edges of the
tank, to break up the silhouette. Then ink the whole think with a dark green
ink.

The only part that I really hate is painting the treads, and I've learned to
live with that.

John, This sounds like an excellent scheme. Do you have pictures of this
available on the web or that you can e-mail? Thanks.

I use several different schemes:

Dutch mercenaries: Vehicles--a very light grey-green with dark olive
tiger
stripes, hover skirts are black. Troops--feldgrau.

Romanov Hegemony Army: Vehicles-dark brown with light olive disruptive
lines, hover skirts are graphite. Troops--light olive.

Romanov Hegemony Maritime: Vehicles-light/medium grey with white
identification markings, hover skirts are graphite. Troops--light olive

again.

ESU Army: Vehicles-desert tan with dark green disruptive lines
(different
style and thickness than the RH ones). Troops--tan or brown.

Renegade Legion Commonwealth (which I'll probably use as Kra'Vak):
Vehicles--medium to dark green tops, light grey bottoms. Trooops--well,
I haven't got any yet...

NSL powered armor--dk armor yellow (looks sort of olive-greenish) with
reddish-brown and tan washes.

Not very original or flashy, but decent enough to look like camo while
allowing vehicles and troops to still look different AND still be found on the
table.

Well, about the only things I have painted up as any kind of coherent force
are my Centurion grav tanks. Most of the Renegade Legion tanks have a
green base coat with lighter green on black camo patterns. Or at least what
I think look like neat camoesque patterns. The TOG tanks are mostly a
brown or tan basecoat with a brown on black camo pattern. The infantry I have
are Battletech figures. Half painted green with lighter green drybushing and
the other half brown with lighter brown drybrushing. I am not nearly nitpicky
enough to paint 6mm infantry with any kind of finesse.

I've posted some pictures on my page. Go to

http://www.voicenet.com/~johncrim/Cammo.html

and then go to Forrest/Jungle Camo. The miniatures pictured are at the
very bottom of the page: three Ral Partha figures, and a single Grenadier
model that I'm not sure about. The scans are pretty awful, though --
fair warning.

Actually, the pages as a whole are pretty awful, and I'm going to probably
start overhauling them this weekend. I think that I need to do a proper
gallery page, and to see what I can do about improving the pictures. Plus,
maybe I can spell "camo" correctly this time around....

> Hello all:

I figure they have a chameleon coating, so paint them as I please to be able
to readily identify them. For
most of my forces, I used a black primer/basecoat,
drybrushed with medium gray then (lightly) with light gray, and picked out the
tracks with light gray or steel. Then I picked out some details on about half
with primary blue and the other half with primary red, so I can split the
forces for "training exercises" (i.e., if someone doesn't bring their own).
And call them Force Blue and
Force Red. ;-) I've used this for GZG tracked tanks in various
sizes, as well as AA and missile tanks, and for Battletech
pieces--including Savannah Master hoverscouts.

My infantry is Battletech stuff (and therefore oversize). It's basically black
with gray drybrush and steel weapon
barrels. Faces are single-color flesh, faceplates are
single-color blue, and I'm considering whether to try to
pick out any details on larger weapons to provide some visual disinction from
across the table.

A pack of 20 plastic hover APCs (I can't think of the mfg at the moment, but I
think there's only one mfg that makes and distributes such) I painted up in 3
different blotch camos:

o (6) Forest camo: Olive green with forest green blotches and bands and
partial black "edges" on the blotches.

o (6) Desert camo: Just like forest, but sandy-tan base,
burnt & raw sienna blotches, and black edges.

o (8) City (rubble): Light gray base, dark gray sharp-edged
blotches (with edges running in various directions),
and partial black and/or white edges. This would also
work reasonably well for lunar camo, though a
   higher-contrast dazzle might be better.

On all these camos, I painted the hover skirts black, then
"wet-brushed" with a dark brown and drybrushed with a medium
brown.
