Subject: [OFFICIAL] New Stuff from GZG!

Hi all,

A little commercial announcement - we've just released the first NEW
batch
of human-force FT ships for quite a while! The moulds were made today,
so
they are officially available as of tonight - and all you GZG "listers"
(hmmm, that has worrying connotations for Red Dwarf fans.... <grin>) are the
first to know about them!

OUT NOW are the first six releases in the ISLAMIC FEDERATION fleet; in
keeping with the Islamic theme they all feature forward-swept crescent
"wings", which by a fortuitous conincidence means that a number of you may
find places for them in certain other fleets that you may be
building.....
not that that would have anything to do with us, of course... ;-)

All these will be on sale at SALVO this Sunday, for those of you who are
coming along - but see us early, there won't be many of each in stock!!

In cidentally, I've done these models myself (as opposed to all the
"old"
FT ships which were Paul Copeland's work, and the SV and Phalon stuff which
are Dave Garnham's) and I have to say I'm very pleased with the way they've
turned out - I hope you'll like them as much. Expect more Islamic
releases soon to fill out the fleet roster, plus the start of fleets for the
Japanese, New Israelis and maybe even some UNSC stuff - I'm on a roll at
the moment....!

Please don't pester us for photos yet - we've only just finished making
the damn things! As and when I get the chance to photograph them I'll try to
get the pics onto a website somewhere and tell you all about it. Oh, and
before you ask, no we haven't done official stats for them yet
either..... :-/

One way you listers (there's that term again...) could help is to suggest a
few suitable class names for the Islamic ships - something in keeping
with the background and national identity. Any thoughts?

Anyway, here's what is out so far:

FT-1001 Islamic Fed light fighters (6)* 0.95
FT-1021 Islamic Fed heavy fighters (6)* 0.95
FT-1022 Islamic Fed strikeships (3) 1.25
FT-1004 Islamic Fed frigates (2) 1.95
FT-1005 Islamic Fed destroyers (2) 2.25
FT-1010 Islamic Fed battleship 4.25

(All prices in UKP)

* We could have cheated and just renamed the GF013 and 016 fighters as
Islamics, but we didn't - these are wholly new designs.

Happy thrusting......

Perhaps folks are overreacting. I'd take a look at andrew toppan's navy page

things (like letting their daughter marry an Englishman), but I think I would
have a fair deal of trouble explaining that I was playing a game that took
their holy book in vain. Using the name of the Koran or the Prophets would, in
my opinion, severely hinder St^3 Jon's expansion of his global business empire
into the Middle East ;-)

A further thought is that the IF would be unlikely to name a ship after the
Koran anyway - what if it was destroyed ? Try explaining that to the
faithful masses (analogous to Hitler renaming the 'Deutschland' during WWII
because he didn't want the ship carrying the name of the Fatherland to be
sunk).

I think that I would agree with Beth that Koran would not be a correct name
for a ship. If the IF is made up of Islamic fundamentalist, they would never
even conceive of naming anything the Koran. However, the "Wrath Of Allah", the
Sword Of Allah, etc would be appropriate.

about Hashashin (sp?) for the heavy fighter instead?

Jon, Do you have any general thoughts on the design philosophy of the Islamic
Federation? Does the IF build ships that are fast with little or no armor (as
they were in the Crusades)? What weapon systems other than beams are they
partial to? (etc.) They have fighters but no carriers yet, are their carriers
for only hauling fighters around or are their carriers capable of defending
them selves? I can't remember off hand but who are their main opponents so we
know what type of ships they are built to counter (like NSL ships have lots of
PDS and ADFCs to counter the FSEs salvo missiles).

I'm just trying to pick your head on who the IF are so the designs really fit
into the GZGverse. A full backgound is not needed, just a couple thoughts on
the IF design philosiphy.

I suppose this would be dependant on the sorts of battles that the IF expects
to engage in.

Raids? Major space battles? Support of planetary drops? Home defense? Planet
devastation? Breakthrough?

In turn, what types of battles they expect to fight depend on who their
opponents are and what their opponents have (in terms of ships and planetary
resources and planetary defenses) and the general strategic relationship
between the IF and their opponents.

Are they fighting for territory (to take or defend)? Are they doing
punitive strikes? Pre-emptive strikes? Piracy (anti-shipping)? And so
forth.

I really don't know much about the IF, so I can't answer these questions.
Anyone else?

But the narn are very different. They view their religion in different ways.
There could be a precident of naming things after their prophet.

Sword of Allah (or better, Sword of Islam) would probably be good. You should
be aware that there are different feelings about this sort of thing within
differing Muslim communities. For example, one set believes that giving a boy
the name "Mohammed" is improper; one set believes that it's okay to give him
the name but that it ought not to be used (and they call him by his middle
name instead); a third set feels that it is proper and simply gives him a high
standard to live up to.

Yep. That was a new Ohio class boomer. The name caused quite a stir.

Do you all remember the stir caused in the U.S. when the Navy named one of
it's attack subs (or was it a Boomer?) Corpus Christi? I guess it all depends
just how much divine support you believe you have for your military efforts.

Actually, it was a Los Angeles-class attack boat. Boomers are named
after states (like battleships of old; I suppose 24 Tridents is the modern
equivalent of 9 x 16"...). Attack subs are named after cities (like cruisers
used to be). As I recall, the objections were moderated slightly by changing
the name to "USS City of Corpus Christi."

Oops! You're right. That was a 688. I could have sworn I read it from a
newspaper article that referred to it as an Ohio class. Anyways, not all 688s
were named after U.S. cities, much like other classes they sometimes vary from
the norm. The 688s include one named after Hyman Rickover. Also, I believe
there are two new attack subs in a new class or hull type that are under
construction and are both named after states. Surface ships are also named
after states and cities.

AIRC, they ended up naming it "The City Of Corpus Christi", it was the local
Catholic Church that really made the fuss. The whole of South Texas was in a
stir over that one.
