Subject: Nothingt's wrong with SF or Hx or Fx!
I used to think I was 'strange' (well, I am but not just because of that!) because I play all three genres. But, while still not a plurality (much less a majority) I am finding that there are some people who enjoy historical games AND Science Fiction games AND Fantasy games besides me. I grew up a bookworm (we have at my parents film - remember home movies? - of me (before I could 'read') looking through encyclopedias) and I was gifted with several men and women known as "teachers" who instilled a love of literature and a love of history which led to historical war games (Board then miniatures and a short experiment with computer games) while I also enjoyed playing with plastic models and 'toy soldiers' from an earlier age (preparing me for painting miniatures by painting each 'army' of toy soldiers in different color helmets - Long Live the Yellow Army whose men were seldom lost in the grass of our yard!) and __reading__ lead me to Tolkien [and Lewis but that is a non-wargame thread] (and Fantasy - and a long side trip through white box D&D) and Andre Norton (which led me to Science Fiction and then back to Fantasy) so how could I NOT love playing all three genres? Books are the key to many universes Hx, SF, and Fx (my abbreviations for History, Science Fiction, and Fantasy) are like different ethnic foods. Hx is like the Steak and Potatoes meal to me, a lot to chew on, delicious if cooked correctly, nutritious and Filling. Fx is like Italian cooking - flavorful, rich, and open to many interpretations (spices) - some of which I dislike and some of which I love - I admit to being fixated on those dwarves and slighting Elves. Science Fiction gaming is like Mexican food - Spicy, comes in many forms (Chihuahua (the state not the dog) style cooking is not Mex-Tex) which can please or punish the palate, can be filling but not authentic (Taco Bell) or very authentic (the Loco Burrito lunch place I love - where I get the Northern Mexico style burritos) but always capable of satisfying your hunger. Long live ALL genres of War Gaming! Gracias,
