Subject: RE: New Weapon

Here's my comparison of equal mass (4), single arc heavy weapons.

"Phased Array"
> Range Avg. Damage B3-1: 1/2 PT-1: Target area: Factor

* target area is the pie slice section for that damage range.

> Range Avg. Damage B3-1: 1/2 PT-1:
                        Factored
> 0-6 MU 0.8 2.4 2.92

> 12-18 8 9 8.8

Damage/Area of attack factor:
PA-1: 44.8
B3-1: 45.8
PT-1: 33.2 (Ignore screens)

Looks to me like the PA balances quite well at mass 4. It's increased
med-long range damage makes up tactically for it's fractionally lower
statistics.

Here's a PSB for it. Call it a Far-Focus Beam Array (FFBA). It's
composed of multiple emitters that focus beam more efficently at long ranges.
You get more power, but less focus close in. It'd be perfect for minis with
pylons or struts (UN heavies, IF crescent ships, NI's Jericho BC etc...

Noam & Brian:

Thanks for all the number crunching and help with the PSB.

I'll distill it all into something "list-able" and resend the second
draft :-)

Actually I am pretty sure the code segment looks like this:

    if (check_Oerjan_rant_this_week_against_HTML not true) {

The FSE would far sooner call it the FFBA (or translate it to ABFE or
somesuch). The acronym GPT has an unfortunate phonetic value in the language
of Voltaire ("J'ai Pete")!

Then again, if the plasma bolt theory is correct then perhaps the coincidence
is correct...

Don't you mean, "Je suis petit"? Unless of course you really meant to say
"I have Pete, /my homosexual lover/" [Emphasis added] In which case I
take great umberage and protest at all levels!

Our local group has come up with questions regarding fighter types.
Specifically is it canon for mix of fighter types? ie Long Range Torpedo
fighters? Heavy Attack fighters, Fast Interceptors?

What has Jon said on the Subject?

Hmm.. interesting concept, it's accuracy increases with range, while its
damage reduces.

how about the converse - damage increases with range, while accuracy
reduces - use the tabel above, but invert the last two columns - psb -
some kind of 'energy charge' that builds up as it travels through space?

This seems to be a popular varient rule - but IIRC I've never seen an
official write-up - although I quite like the idea of
a) give 'standard' fighters different load outs - ie. anti-fighter
missiles for interceptors, or 'drop tanks' for long range. b) a system to
design slighly tweaked 'custom' fighters for different
races/nations.

The modular figher rules by Jared Noble (IIRC) do a good job of handling the
latter.
