Starship Modeler has an interesting article about making a resin model from a
3D computer model.

http://www.starshipmodeler.com/projects/soft2hard.htm

ToyBuilders.com uses machines designed for rapid prototyping through a process
called "Stereo Lithography" to print your model in 3D using laser setting
resin plastic.

No specific costs are listed because it varies by model but this could be a
neat way to create masters for miniatures.

I think we've gone over this before on list.

We've got a similar machine on campus, though it's VERY expensive to use.

There's a similar machine that uses a sugar, I think, that's much less
expensive; works sort of like an inkjet, but in 3D.

Course, it has to be just for prototyping; I seem to recall discussions of
models accidently left in the rain. ;->=

Still, for a few bucks, a friend taking a course on using the equipment has
offered to take an autocad file and 'print it out' for me. Now, if only I can
get a drawing together before the class ends...

Looking at their site, I would guess that the price for a resin model might be
as little as $100 or less. Sure, that's still fairly expensive, but compared
to what it used to cost to make a prototype...
