hi All I am new to the list but not to gaming.. I game a non Tufley universe
in civil war using the ships (mainly heavily converted) from GW empire range.
I have used both FT, BFG and several lesser known rules sets.. I "discovered"
GZG dirtside figures while looking for a source of 6mm minis on the web a few
weeks ago... I live in Spain where gaming is "limited" and solo play.. I don't
therefore get much chance to look at miniatures that often.. I seldom return
to the UK.. I ordered some of The GZG dirtside infantry from Jon and was
immediately "blown away" by the beauty of the figures. I have seen less detail
on 15mm figs.. My next move was to purchase samples of each pack and out of
interest (I am a rules magpie) a copy of dirtside II.. I have to admit my
interest was also in personalities as I believe I wargamed with Mike Elliot
many years ago in the Witham area and wanted to see what he had been up to.
(If Mikes on the list
maybe he could make contact and confirm/deny this..) .. After a few
minutes reading the rules, I dived for the gaming table and started to
experiment.. I was very impressed.. Fast, simple and violent.. Since then I
have dusted off my 6mm figure collection, rediscovered old unpaited Scotia and
I think CMD figures bought at a long forgotten convention in the UK and
started to table game my planetary attacks rather than boardgame them as I
have till
now..
Ah what rediscovered joys!!!! Oh and all in 3 weeks.. heheheheh I live in a
tourist town so winter is a time of rest and devotion to
wargaming...?=0)
lucky guy huh??? The only cloud on the horizon is the fact that even after 30
years my long suffering wife has never discovered the joys of "playing toy
soldiers" so, sadly, I don't have a regular opponent under lock and
key..
Enough rambling (apologies to all having no interest in my life history)!! I
discovered the list some 3 days ago and am tortuously working my way through 6
years of list archives.. can someone please help me out and point me to a
computer assist for vehicle designers for dirtside..(the more the merrier..)
BTW I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the level of discussion
evident in the archives.. congratulations.. I have found very few lists with
such depth of both interest and quality of discussion.. The sort of people who
play a set of rules say a lot about the rules themselves.. If the archives are
anything to go by I have at last struck paydirt with GZG... Thanks all for any
forthcoming assistance..
Welcome, Bob!
If you don't mind, I have a few comments:

While personally find the concept unusual, several of the list members play
FT II, a miniatures game, by e-mail. Given that you're running things on
a board by yourself anyway, this will give you some interaction that is much
of the joy of this hobby.
I've not heard DS II run that way, though it's obviously an area you'd be keen
on.
Just out of curiosity, you've not seen 'tourists' who'd love to get away
from the SO long enough for a quick pick up game? ;->=

By far, the norm, and the reason Beth should probably attain sainthood on this
list, if not gaming in general. However, most of us are quite
appreciative of our own long-suffering SO's. When you live with a
neatness freak, and you've got the basement, your home office, half the
bedroom, places you've forgotten cluttered with books, games, figs,
junk-waiting-to-become-scenery, what have I done to be worthy?!?!?

Indeed! Having been the generator of more than my share of bonehead comments,
I have already thanked the group for civility as well as
well-reasoned and insightful comments. I thank them again.

On this one, I fail you, though I'm certain I've seen these discussed, and
links provided. Until someone(s) pops up, look in the archives. It's in
there... ;->=

Hi I live in Cataluña. Yes there are groups and enlightened individuals.. The
problem is that they are few and far between.. My nearest club is 2 hours
drive from home but even that is not the whole problem.. The nature of my work
is such that I "disappear" for the 6 months of the high season which makes
continuity difficult.. The two facts combined make a gaming group difficult to
both arrange and maintain.. I now game as stated previously
solo or by PBeM .. Far from being second choice I have grown to enjoy
the slow relaxed rate of solo gaming and the lack of urgency to complete a
game before "going home"

I'm reasonably sure there is one available on one of the Web Ring pages, which
you can get to from somewhere like Jerry's page:

Yep, this is one of those rare places where the people who are talking quite
often have a good idea what they're talking about. Several people in military
service, several astronomers, a couple of people who design military
equipment. Plus a couple of people who, like me, try to sound convincing...
I have found very few lists

Sure. You'd mentioned solo gaming. Full Thrust can be played PBeM fairly
easily. I'd expect that you could manage DS2. Create a map and post it to a
web page as a graphic, then give orders by map coordinates. Might have to
make some adjustments--say simultaneous movement instead of alternating
activations--but it should be manageable. In fact, if you'd like to try
it--and bearing in mind that you probably have more experience at
playing DS2 than I do (you've played it more than once, right?), let me know
offlist
Hey Bob how are you doing? Been playing much lately? Welcome to the list. You
been doing much in BFG?
Hi familiar name..?=0) The ship collection keepsgrowing and the campaign is
well under way.. However my main interest right now and the reason for being
here is ground fighting.. I always swore i would keep away from miniatures...
Jon Tuffley killed that one stone dead.. thanks Jon!!!
G'day guys,

I think my claims on the former are kiboshed by the fact I'm also a chronic
"clutterer" (but I've got to give Derek something to do while the kids are at
school right?);)
Have fun (and welcome on board Bob)

Welcome Bob, I'm a newbie (relative) to the list but they let me rant anyway!
Regrets of no full time opponent.
I understand the wife thing, my Beautiful Princess was a great gnome PC for
years in my old D&D campaign but doesn't do war games either.
Hey Bob, you old salt - long, long time no speak etc.!!!!
Yep I remember well those days in Witham/Chelmsford/Braintree. A certain
wild west game at your house involving Mexican Rurales and a train comes to
mind, do you remember that one?
I'm still gaming (as you can see) living in St.Albans, Hertfordshire, married,
3 kids, still working in IT.
Welcome to the list and the world of GZG. Jon T is a great guy and a real
friend and gamer. It seems ironic that I grew up within spitting distance of
his neck of the woods and now I live 90 miles away. Ho, hum thats life.
(Note for US folks - in the UK 90 miles is a long way away!!) Still we
meet up at conventions and shows and have a chin wag as well as email. Glad
you like DSII. Now we have whetted your appetite, you should take a look at
SGII as well. I know of one ex forces guy who refused to play it on the
grounds that it is too realistic and brought back unhappy memories of the
Falklands.
How are you doing? Drop me a line off list.
Regards
Mike
