Assuming we run with Matt's kind and generous offer, what needs to happen
before Jon leaves BI?

No clue what this is (I guess I'm just not in the know), but I can again offer
to host mailing lists. Small ones are even easier than large ones.

All un-sub from BI and then re-sub to colorado would
probably be best. Those who don't want to join the new list don't have to and
at least the others will get the join message from the new server. If people
want to join for the digest then they can make that choice at Join time. This
gives the benefit of losing those who are not that bothered anymore.

The new server join message needs to be created to have the copyright
disclaimer, list rules and the GZG Meta FAQ, plus the usual list server
command summary.

If the BI server list shuts down on a given day then use of the old address
will just bounce back which should give people a clue that the list is gone.

Its your call admin, this is just a users view.

FYI the majordomo list server commands are summarised on the FT Computer Core
page for the Computer Discussion list. Just so people will know whats
available on a new server.

O.k., if everyone wants to take me up on the offer I'll offer the following
migration proposal:

1) I'll set up the new full list on csua.berkeley.edu. Thats the
machine I run all my big lists from. Beefy FreeBSD/AMD box.

2) If wanted, I can set up a new "special" list on wraith.cs.colorado.edu.
Thats a much smaller box that I use to run more private, less bandwidth
intensive lists. Easy to make it a closed list and all.

3) I'd like to start with a current list of all members, so people won't have
to subscribe to the new list. Much faster migration that way.

4) A Note, I'll add auto archiving and a digest version of the list,
since thats basically what my auto-setup stuff does anyway. :) The
archive would just be a full text thing, no searching or anything.

How does that sound to people? When would you like the migration to happen?

Mike, you grab a sponge and wipe the coffee stains off the meeting table.

Barclay, you grab a mop and some Mister Murphy's soap and swab down the deck.

Owen, you and Niall clean the latrine, (Make sure you take down those girly
pictures in the stalls)

John, please make sure the fireplace is cleaned out.

Brian, grab allow those B5 tapes, we'll need them at the new place.

Noah, you and Jon can run ahead to the new place and start setting up the
gaming tables plus light the fireplace while you're at it. Colorado is cold in
the winter.

Oerjan, empty the wastebaskets.

Tim, get the lights.

I'll pull my truck around back and the rest of you can load up all the minis
and terrain and we'll start heading over.

However we do this migration, lets have someone put up a migration page of
HTML somewhere with the new address for the new list and any new format
instructions (for subscribe, unsub, etc).

My only worry is the DNS I use through work must be somewhat thick in the head
since it sometimes cannot find domains I want to get to (I had trouble with
Oerjan the other day and have had problems getting to Bermuda and Mexico
before). I just want to make sure that whatever new domain the list moves to,
I can find it successfully.

Hi everybody,

Finally catching up on this thread...

Yep. I'll need these files also from the current list.

That would work. Or putting some kind of forwarding message there.

The HTML access is good (I've used it several times and have plans to use it
again!) and the searching is a good thing...

The majordomo setup I tend to use just stores the digests and a daily
compilation from the main list (some different things, but they have the same
content) and allows people to get the files via email. It doesn't put them on
the web, do any indexing, etc. So yes, I would say your stuff is still useful
and valuable.

There is a package to directly put majordomo archives on the web with glimpse
searchs and everything, but the last time I tried to get it working it failed
really badly.
