OK, I just did an intense reading of the FT Universe Histories. I made the
mistake of starting with Stargrunt II. The problem was, several names and
abbreviations are dropped but not explained earlier. After cross checking in
FT and MFT I found what I was looking for. Here then, for the benefit of
everyone is a break down of all the major and minor players in the Core
Systems and the Inner and Outer colonies. Please offer corrections and fix
omissions as necessary. Note: I was being kind by placing the PAU in the Major
Powers category. Given that Africa now comprises about 2% of the World's
economy it is a hope that in the future African nations have advanced
themselves and outlived the legacy of colonial conquest.
Superpowers:
New Anglican Confederation (NAC) - Nation
Eurasian Solar Union (ESU) - Nation
United Nations (UN) - Organization
Major Powers:
New Swabian League (NSL) - Nation
Federal States Europa (FSE) - Nation
Pan African Union (PAU) - Nation
Minor Powers:
New Israel (NI) - Nation
Islamic Federation (IF) - Nation
League of Latin American Republics - Organization
Romanov Hegemony - Nation
Free Cal-Tex (FCT) - Nation ("hey, what are you puttin' us down here in
the 'Minor' powers fer?")
(conjecture) Mercenaries All powers, with the exception of the Superpowers,
sponsor mercenaries. Many mercenaries are citizens of the NAC or ESU and have
training from the respective militaries even though those states do not
sponsor them. They are sponsored as private ventures.
So I now know who the players are and now I can create my scenario. Plenty
of room for twisty plots and layers of betrayal and back stabbing - my
kind of Universe! I write a second article about the plot line for the
campaign.

Interestingly enough, there are currently a number of private companies trying
to convince the UN that private security firms are the answer to personel
shortages for peacekeeping missions (that way if Japan or Germany want to
contribute only money to a mission, the UN could still get well trained
professional soldiers). Professional peacekeeping. Seems like a good use of
mercs if the companies are monitored.
Isn't it funny how the future of the game world might not be so far fetched
after all.... (grin)

Good question, two of them are still in my notes and didn't make it to my list
by accident.
OU, SF and IC are Minor Powers. Holland is still a seperate nation?
Figures, considering they put mayonasie on their fries. ;-) Their mercs
did
have an impact in the Mercenary War (2128-2132). Japan and Switzerland
are both on the borders of more powerful unions so I suspect they are minor
states with just enough power to maintain independence and sponsor good
merc units. The Saeed Khalifate is an off-shoot of a minor power, the
IF. I'd classify them as minor power nation even though they only hold two
worlds (Abu Haman and Sad Al Bari). Thanks for pointing these out. What do you
think of listing Japan and Switzerland as minor powers?
The Saeed Khalifate actually gives me an idea for a further twist to the plot
I am devising. They seem to go into 2182 strongly and are even used by the ESU
which is definitely mildly despotic. Wheels are turning...
Where are the Oceanic Union? The Indonesian Commonwealth? Japan? Holland?
Switzerland? The Scandinavian Federation? The Saeed Khalifate?

Steve spake thusly upon matters weighty:
A further question: I'm assuming in the GZG universe (by 300 years hence) we
may have colonized L4, L5, and the moon, and possibly Mars or the belt. Are
there outlander separatist movements? In some ways such space colonies might
have more in common with each other than their nationalistic blocs on Earth.
Has this been covered in some part of the history I'm unaware of? Or has no
one thought about the position these colonies (if they exist) might occupy?
(Apologies if I should know the answer to this already).
> Where are the Oceanic Union? The Indonesian Commonwealth? Japan?
And just where exactly is the Saeed Khalifate? I assume Middle East, but
where?

The other countries I can figure out where the background came from, but these
two are new to me. If someone could simply give a brief rundown on these (or
at least a pointer at the reference material).
Also, wouldn't Holland still be "Kingdom of the Netherlands," or is that the
SF (above).

Pete, I suggest swapping the FCT and PAU locations, and reducing the UNSC to a
minor power.
Reasons:
1) The state of California is the worlds 7th to 9th largest
economy. (If I remember correctly.)
2) The world is currently seeing the results of the end of the
colonial era, for more than a hundred years the tribes were unable to kill
each other off, and are now trying to make up for lost time.
3. The UN cannot even function against even a minor power without
permission from a major power. (But then, this is fiction.)
Bye for now.
> > Where are the Oceanic Union? The Indonesian Commonwealth? Japan?
Nope, like the LLAR (post 2098) and New Israel the Saaed Khalifate is
entirely based off-Earth. Which starts to answer your first question
(which I seem to have snipped, oops). The disposition of the rest of this
solar system is totally undetailed in the timeline so far. I guess that all
the Earth based powers have holdings and the UN tries to enforce some sort of
peace.
> OU, SF and IC are Minor Powers. Holland is still a separate nation?
Very much so. First two miniatures have been released.
> What do you think of listing Japan and Switzerland as minor powers?
Well they're not major powers are they? ;-)
We can guess that they maintained their independence by adopting a fairly
neutral stance. That and lots of money. Could have a new category of
Independent Nation for those small countries that try to stay out of the big
boys' wars.
There are indubitably other separatist powers at large. The French Republic on
Bretonneux and Doullens is mentioned in the SG timeline
and in a scenario in MT. But it eventually falls and is re-absorbed
into the FSE. I'm sure there are pleanty more. Ranging in size between the
Khalifate at the largest and a rebel asteroid colony at the smallest.

It will appear under the "fiction" section (as a background).
I think it is worth giving the Japanese a mention. After all, if they are
worth the NAC taking a great interest then they should be considered of some
note.
Same for the Saeed Kalifate, as they play a notable part as do the Indonesian
Commonwealth and the Oceanic Union!
Has this just confused things?
Here's the listing as I have it so far...
Superpowers:
New Anglian Confederation (NAC) - Nation
Eurasian Solar Union (ESU) - Nation
United Nations (UN) - Organization
Major Powers:
New Swabian League (NSL) - Nation
Federal States Europa (FSE) - Nation
Pan African Union (PAU) - Nation
Minor Powers:
New Israel (NI) - Nation
Islamic Federation (IF) - Nation
League of Latin American Republics (LLAR) - Organization
Romanov Hegemony (RH) - Nation
Free Cal-Tex (FCT) - Nation
Oceanic Union (OU) - Nation
Indonesian Commonwealth (IC) - Nation
Scandinavian Federation (SF) - Nation
Saeed Khalifate (SK) - Nation
Don't Know Yets:
Japan - Nation
Holland - Nation
Switzerland - Nation
...if anyone has any adds, changes, etc. I still have no idea where the
Scandinavian Federation or the Saeed Khalifate come from, however.

For the Khalifate, check the "2130" entry on P.65 of SGII - it is a
small
fundamentalist Islamic off-earth nation composed of two ex-IF colonies
of Abu Haman and Sad Al Bari. Definitely a minor nation, but exports a
quantity of fanatical and effective mercenaries.
The Scandinavian Fed is new to the timeline - we have never detailed
anything about the Scandinavian countries, but wanted to do some troops in
arctic combat kit and decided to introduce them. They'll have to be covered in
a future publication. For the moment, I would place them as a minor
power with both on- and off-earth holdings. The SF will consist of
Sweden, Denmark, Norway, probably Finland (Hi, Mikko!!) and possibly Iceland,
plus a number of small inner colony and outworld settlements.

Having Finland as part of the Scandinavian Federation is plausible, but it
won't be a seamless fit. No common language, a history of 700 years of
oppression...
Finland also has the highest population density up north (even Reykjavik
is roughly on the same latitude as Helsinki, and 99% of Finland is north
of that). I think I read somewhere that 25% of the world's population loony
enough to live this far North are Finns (compared to about 0.1% of
total population).
John spake thusly upon matters weighty:

Probably because there is no such thing as a tax-paying UN citizen.
They lack the tax base and the base of fervor (like nations have) that helps
drive large military operations. They live (if they run as they do today) off
the table scraps of the big powers.
There has always been problems expanding the view of mankind. I'm
sure the individual-tribe boundary, the tribe-city boundary, the
city-province boundary, the province-nation boundary and the
nation-power block boundaries have all had their proponents and
opponents. I see globalism/internationalism now as a force opposed by
nationalist interests, much the way that small petty dukes and kinglets
opposed the formations of large kingdoms or empires in olden days.
And until the UN gets a tax base, some citizens (I'd volunteer to be a Citizen
of Earth if offered the opportunity.... despite being a very happy Canadian),
and therefore some sort of real policy, real popular support and a real
bankroll, they'll never be able to do too much. And they'll still manage to
help a lot of folks despite all their shortcomings...
Thomas.
