Mudside Thrust, or GZG meets ACW

Having absolutely nothing better to do on my commute home, I was daydreaming
about my Thoroughbred Miniatures ACW Ironclads, bemoaning the fact that
Excalibur's Ironclads rules are very chart intensive, and wondering if there
was any way to make a simpler ironclad game. Then it

hit me.... Not to long ago somebody posted wet navy rules for the Napoleonic
era... why not for ACW.... After a bit of mulling, I took a mixture of
statistics from Ironclads, added armor and size rules from Dirtside II,
threshold and SSD rules from Full Thrust and Shazam....

We played a brief scenario.... It seems to work....... If anyone is
interested, I'll put the conversions and an ssd on my page.

Which system does Thoroughbred Minis use? Wehat scale do you play? I play
1:1200 scal, but this year we are experimenting with 1:600 scale. I personally
use "Age of Iron" rules.

Yeah, I'm interested Larry. Put it up on you Web page and let's have a look.
BTW have you seen "Hammerin' Iron" by Peter Pig (via Brookhurst Hobbies in the
US, I think). Another jolly good set of rules for ACW ironclads.

Larry I'm intrested, being a historical wargamer at heart I too have been
trying to find a good ACW naval system. I play Ironclads (Yaquinto) but find
it also to be too chart intensive. So I would like to see your FT conversion.
Sounds Interesting!!!

Thoroughbred does not use a system per se.... they are 1/600, and I use
them with Excalibur (Yaquinto) Ironclad rules.

Thoroughbred Minis are 1/600 scale and are based for any particular
game. My group uses the minis with the Exalibur's "Ironclads" rules, converted
by measuring in inches from the center point of the ship, instead of hexes and
using the templates included as firing arcs (as appropriate). While there is a
few charts to use (normally you only use 3 charts (2 of which are memorized by
the second game) for each shot), in my opinion (and my group's), the game is
very simple to play and the detail and special hits are really cool. The game
appears complicated to play at first but it is no
more complex than FT/MT with most the options from MT in play (ok, I
cloak for 12 turns).

On the cloaking device issue, my group requires the individual to write all
orders from the time of cloak to uncloak when the ship cloaks. Because of this
some really cool incidents have happened. We have had 2" broadsides from dual
decloaking ships (multiple times). Once I decloaked directly infront of my
friends supership (104 mass 2000 pt ship) with my 180 mass 2000 pt ship with
my rear arc facing his front arc. It looked very grim but he hadn't put in his
orders to fire his wave gun and the only other main weapon he had was a pulse
torpedo (other than quite a few missiles). And, finally, both my opponents
cloaked and one decloaked across the board. I flew my ship around on my side
for a few turns and then accelerated toward
the bogey position of the second (still-cloaked) ship and fired a needle
missile to where I figured he would decloak. He decloaked THAT turn with a
needle missile 1" away and my SDN about 5" in his rear fire arc (it pays to
know your enemy) - can you say no more cloaking device.

Be warned before you order these rules. They are lightweight, but great fun.
They do not have a lot of detail, and are not always very realistic, but can
easily have more complex ideas bolted into the system. I have a suspicion the
situation could be reversed and these rules could also be used for a space
combat game.

I would have to agree w/ the above comments. While I also have tried
'Age of Iron' rules; 'Ironclads' is simple and easy to get into with a nice
amount of detail for cases where needed. Playing the 'GZG meets ACW' should
provide for a simpler and quicker game (the kind I like).

As for miniatures that I'm using for SG2, I also am sticking w/ the 40K
figs. I have collected in the past. Right now games are put together on the
fly, but I hope I can create a nicer campaign now that I've created some
background (somewhat similar to the GZG history presented).

I think the company that creates the Silent Death minis also has a boxed set
called 'Space Rangers' that includes 50 plastic Marines in power armor. A
discount store I know sells them for under $25 which is not a bad deal
considering how many minis
you get. (These seem to be the oversized-25mm found in 40K and Warzone;
the box says 31mm).

Those guys are made by Grenadier, and are the faux 25mm of 40k. They are the
best 40k-oid alternative minis around, IMHO. Too bad Grenadier's having
troubles.

The line of Space Rangers has been picked up by I.C.E., which also has a

boxed set of mix and match mecha called Steel Warriors.
