Subject: Mounting fighters

I'm finally getting around to dealing with the fighter minis for FT and am
looking for some ideas on mounting. Personally, I'm tossing the Geo-hex
bases -- will probably cut off the nobs and sand flat for mounting a
larger ship or VTOL. Here is what I thought of:

Building a base with FIMO to fit a recepticle for a d6 and space to pin 3
fighters (I know I can use just 1, but 3 looks better). It could also be made
with wood and a Dremel tool to carve out the space for the die. How has this
worked for those who've tried it?

Putting a 1" pin into each fighter and mounting them on a piece of plasticine
on a hex base. Someone in my Silent Death group did this for his missiles and
torps which I copied. The disadvantage to this is having to use 6 fighters on
a base and having to count the number before firing. But you do get a good
physical representation of what's really in the group on the table.

Any other ideas?

I use the old square GW epic scale figure bases. They are large enough to hold
a small D6 and the have a flag pole that works great for holding the fighter
mini.

Here is one that I saw at GenCon used by Lew Stoneking that I want to try. He
took the Battletech hex bases with raised edges, drilled holes and mounted 3
pins in 3 front corners then mounted a fighter on each pin head.
In the middle of the base he drilled a hole and glued in a T-pin (any
fabric store should have them) to use as a handle so people don't pick them up
by the fighters. There is enough room left over on the base to

fit 2 smaller d6s, 1 for the number of fighters and the other for endurance.

I have my fighters mounted in pins with three of them on a 3/4" square
base.
I have a bunch of small counters (about 1/4 x 1/2") painted black with
yellow numbers that I use to show the number of fighters when the squadron
takes damage. With the black bases on the black felt, the fighters look good
and the number counter is easily visible without being too obtrusive.

I've been using Epic bases too, but with the fighter mounted on a plastic pole
in the central hole. With a tiny die in one of the other four holes. I'm going
to try your method as I think it is probably better.

I use a 1" square wooden, with 3 fighters mounted on pins
stuck into it. Behind the fighters, I've blue-tacked a small
sheet of paper, with two number tracks on it:

         123 01
         456 23

Into each track, I stick a pin (I use map marker pins, the type with big
colourful knobs on the end). The left hand track marks the number of fighters,
and the right hand track the
number of endurance turns left. As fighters get destroyed/fight
you just move the pins down the track.

Not merely that, but the old Eldar Guardians can, with two seconds work with

I haven't this variant so here goes :-)

Take one Flying base (GW or other) Assemble and snip off top spike Take one GW
round slotta base Noting that slot is off center, remove center section from
centermost slot side large enough for top of flying base (~2mm) Glue slotta
base to flying base. As the top of the flying base is flat and there is a
section missing from the middle of the slotta base slot side they will fit
well and lock in place. Tape over slotta base hole on top Paint whole thing
black, speckal if desired Glue 5 fighters in pentagon pattern to top leaving
gap in center. Get small (5 mm) dice

To use place dice in center space for fighter count

You may think this crazy, but darn it looks good! I used a vice pin drill to
drill a small hole in the back of each fighter (where the engine would

Wow! Thanks for the compliment. Here's another tip y'all might be interested

I ended up using different lengths sticking out of the back of the fighter so
that I could get different echelon formations.
