Speaking of Web Pages....
I've kept mine pretty much graphics light, excepting the occasional title and
the Navbar that I just added (And one page which is composed of nothing but
large gifs. But, hey: it's a page of counters....). The
only page that mixes a lot of text with a lot of graphics is the Illuminati
fleet page, which has an SSD for each ship. I'm going to be redoing the page
over the next week or two, bringing it more in line with the revised
Illuminati doctrine, and I was wondering about people's
opinions of SSDs.
Are they a good thing? A bad thing? An indifferent thing? I, for one,
find it easier to grasp the subtle intricacies of a ship design when an SSD is
included, but that may be the result of too many years of Car Wars. Plus, you
can save the images and print them out, and that's always a good thing. On the
other hand, it does increase download
time--not unendurably, I think, but it increases it nonetheless.
When I revise the pages, should I: A: Remove the SSDs entirely? B: Put them
all on a separate page (with, eventually, pictures of the minis)? Or C: Just
leave the page as it?
I'm leaning towards "C", but I like to hear the opinions of others.
Of course, when I do the DSII page, I'm going to include record sheets
for everything--tables, not graphics, but that's another debate. I'm
still not using frames, though!

i assume you mean in the context of a web page, rather than in general.
they are nice to have, nasty to have to depend on (download time), and
aggravating to have inlined in the page. what about a text breakdown, with a
link to the ssd so that you can grab it if you want.
also, mightn't it be possible to draw SSDs using HTML tables, with GIF icons
for the systems? you would only need one gif for each type of system, so they
would get cached pretty quickly. otoh, the overhead of downloading twenty
small images might be overwhelming.

I'm strongly considering adding some to my page, and I'm to most
anti-graphics person I know--I've got exactally one and it's not going
to take up permenant residence. But since each of my ship stats is on a
seperate small page, it shouldn't add too much to throw up an SSD.

Gotta have your DSII stats! I stick 'em on a seperate page or at the bottom of
the page.

I try to walk the fine line between "elegant simplicity" and
"boring"--so far, I'm probably erring on the side of boring. Of course,
when I get my scanner the whole situation changes. I've got LOTS of minis to
scan...DSII, FT, SGII, misc, the whole magilla.

Stats are a given, but I also want to do actual data cards--like the
ones from the DSII rulebook. I did something similar using frames on my
ShockForce pages. It's pretty easy to do, no real trouble to download, and
prints up nicely. In an ideal world, I'd like to do each datacard with a small
picture of the appropriate mini in the corner...but that does has not yet
come.

Yes.

A seperate page would be good for those who aren't really interested in them.
