"The Dragon Never Sleeps" by Glen Cook is good as well. It gets very slow in places, but has a good mix of space / ground combat over a 30 year campaign and generational politics. My favourite line is when the tactics of a guardship (IV something) is described as "Shoot first and then shoot the survivors." Everyone dreads that particular ship turning up to "police" an incident. Guardships are "DPR" scale compared to most protagonists due to the FTL psb.
