I was at the Canadian GW Games Day in Toronto, and discovered that
Squad-Based Sci-fi Games can be really, really fun. I've played a fair
amount of Warhammer FB with the friend who I went to GD with, (He and his
brother own the minis, rules, and terrain. I go over there and play. Works
great for my very slim wallet), but had never played 40k before. It was WAY
more fun then I figured it would be, but it's also WAY to expensive (12
plastic minis for $40), not to mention it's... very cool relationship with
anything resembling reality. Though I have to admit that I really do like the
Tau. Not only do they look good, they are the only faction that is not a
psychotic declining civilization (plus they have Mecha :-).

I've owned Full Thrust for several years now, and have been lurking on the
list since I got it, so I know GZG makes good games. What I want to know is
how SG plays? I'm looking for a game that lacks Chain-Axes and Daemons
(Especially ones that suddenly appear right in front of my troops as they're
about to escape off the table). If someone(s) could post a report or two of a
game I would appreciate it. Also if I could get a basic breakdown on how the
game plays, I would be VERY happy. I don't have a lot of cash (I'm starting
collage in 6 days, 3 hours and 11 minutes) so I want to make sure that SGII is
the rule set I want before shelling out the money and trying to sell it to my
normal opponents.

Finally if you could give me a rough cost estimate on how much I would need
to spend for 1 set of the Rules + enough troops for 1 side in an
equivalent
of a 500pt 40k game (a small skirmish with 2-3 squads taking about an
hour. At least that's how long my first game took, using a borrowed copy of
the rules and neither of us playing 40k before. Though we've both played much
WFB, and many rules are at least similar.)

Other mini games I've played include Battletech, Heavy Gear and bunches of
RPGs.

The best SG2 sites I've seen are
http://home.att.net/~agoodall/sg2/sg2.html and www.stargrunt.ca . The
latter has "How Do I Organize My Stargrunt Unit - For Beginners"
http://www.stargrunt.ca/toe/sg2_toe_basics/sg2_toe_basics.htm .

The SG rules cost about US$18 (order from www.gzg.com). For the
minis, you have to decide on the scale you want--a lot of players like
25mm (GZG figures are about $1.50/ea), a lot prefer 15mm ($3.75 for 8
figures). I ordered 10 packs of Islamic Federation 15mm figures on 14August,
got them yesterday, total for everything including shipping was $45 and some
change.

You're not limited to GZG figs, though; for example, if you want Soviet versus
Afghanis, you can get 100 minis for about $20 at
Irregular http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/ . Or go to the Dollar
Store, look for 20mm plastic soldiers at 200 pieces for $1 -- they
look surprisingly good once they're painted and based.

Hey, here is a site from a fellow with good info on both SGII and on the Tau.
It was the article here on Tau special ops that sent me from teetering about
the Tau to purchasing them for SGII.

Well Aaron as someone with over 200 beakies (Space Marines) and about the same
in Imperial Guard and Dark Eldar. I can tell you SGII is a far more realistic
and allot more logical! The Other reason to love SGII is you can use anything
you own, in other words there is no mandatory "Chapter Approved BS"
Also keep those Heavy Gear miniatures they make Power Armor/
Walkers...)
The main thing is SGII allows you (I'd say even encourages you) to form your
on MTOs and kit bash to your harts content......)

Has anyone done anything with AWI style games in SG2? Or would it be more
appropriate to use some kind of DS hybrid?

<sigh> Someone's got to say it...

Kind of heavy, isn't it? Well, if you're all standing in a circle, I guess it
wouldn't be too hard holding it up.

All right Narns, come on over.

Well we do have great biceps.....)

p.s. It's just the head on the shield BTW...not so heavy

The Narns next stop. P

Yippie! Almost a full digest of messages all becaws of me :-)
(Mmmm.... CAWS... There ARE rules for Full Auto Shotguns Right?)

I subscribe to the Digest, so I'm going to respond to everybody in one
message. First of all I am very happy at the quick and detailed responses. So
a great big thank you to all. The URLs were very informative, as were all the
other responses. Reminded me of why I've kept reading this list even though I
don't get a chance to play any of the games it discusses.

I think I will pick up the Rules at least. Even if I never play the game, they
will be nice to have *Looks over to the stack of Alternity books I've used 4
times in 3 years that cost me $210 cdn over two years (at 50%
off)*

My first step will be to goto/call Nexus (the local gaming store) and
find
out if the have any stuff. I know they have/had a couple copies of Full
Thurst, Fleet Book 2 and More Thrust, but I'm not sure if they still have any
minis or the Stargrunt Rules.

If that fails I think I will order the Rules from the UK. Always best to go
right to the source.

I'm in (or rather just outside) Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Anybody else in the
Area?

Amen Brother ! :-) Also there is a triffle less Errata. I downloaded all
the Codex and Rules Errata. I just counted up the pages. Came to a total of 95
page. Thats 23 pages more then the whole SGII rule book.

> Also keep those Heavy Gear miniatures they make Power Armor/

Hmmmm... Good Idea. The HGs are the old HO scale ones. I just checked with a
15mm Redcoat. It came up to the knee on my Hunter. The Space Marine I got with
my $23 ticket to Gamesday came up to mid-chest level. I think they will
work just fine.

> The main thing is SGII allows you (I'd say even encourages you) to form

I've been reading the list since at least 1998 (maybe 97, can't quite
remember), so I've kind of picked up on that little fact :-)

Hi Aaron

I have a report of a SG2 game I played some months ago. It's a big zip file
with lots of pictures and html files (kind of a slide show of the game with
comments for each turn).

It is in the Stargrunt section here:
http://www.abacom.com/~ivanohe/game/gaming_e.html

I had played Warhammer 40k some years ago. Sometime, when I feel I should play
again, I just need to watch a 40k game to understand why I prefer SG2.
Usually, the 40K games I saw goes like this: Opponents deploy LOTS of mini and
tanks at about 24" distance. 2 hours later, about half of the minis are in
close combat. Game ended after that. There is not much maneuver.

When we play SG2, we sometime deploy 5-6 feets appart (on 5x6 table).
SG2 squads move a lot more and I feel the game is less static. Cover is really
important also. Squad in the open won't last long against squad in hard cover.

And did I mention the huge pile of rules, codex, FAQ and errata + white
dwarf that the 40K players bring to play? And the discussion about the effect
of that weapons vs. this super tank vs. the new official ruling,
etc...

SG2 is not perfect either. However, it feels more realistic in my opinion, and
you don't need to remember lots of different stats for weapons and special
rules.

Hmmmm.... I always thought of Combat Wombat as a derogatory term for
powergamers, but now I'm thinking of actual Wombats with Weapons.....
