Hedglin, spake thusly upon matters weighty:

I play FT occaisionally. A lot of the discussions that eat the most thread
space are not FT, nor DS2, nor SG2 but 'how the world works' and have
implications to all of the games in one way or another. But I can appreciate
the comment. There is a fair volume of list traffic
- the perils of popularity.

It goes in cycles. I've seen weekends where the entire discussion was powered
armour or what type of tank exists. I don't think that if you checked the past
few months the balance was heavily FT. The idea of people attempting to use
list codes would be useful here too.

This would benefit some members. I'd be reading and contributing to both
probably so it won't matter to me volume wise. But for those who it does
matter to, they may find a new list an asset.

Here are the issues: 1) Does Jon T and the GZG crowd have an interest in
monitoring two lists? Jon had (I thought) already indicated not. And I'd hate
to pit the two crowds against each other for his attention or answers.
Specially since I think FT is (gasp) more popular. 2) Who will list admin this
new list? Johnathan has enough to do (I would think). You volunteering?

Otherwise, I'm cool with the idea. Whatever makes peoples lives easier. I just
look for list tags or interesting topics. But some folk may want even more
streaming.

I've kept out of the 'splitting the lists' debate (didn't want to be seen to
be pushing one view) but I will have to say this is correct. Firstly, I simply
wouldn't have the time to administer another list. I do it for a couple as it
is and I have a job and a life too. I can live without a
third more error messages to sort through every morning - this is a
standard morning and I have 215(!). Now think of a third more. Now think of
weekends. Ugh. But this is personal. If someone wants to run a DS/SG
specific list that's fine by me, but I am of the opinion that this list should
stay as general as possible even if it does mean occasionally I have to stamp
threads that get too far from the remit.

Secondly, I don't think Bolton Institute would really be willing to host
another 'non organisation' list with this sort of level of traffic. You'd need
to find another host.

The general fact about usenet news and internet mailing lists is that if you
only want to read topical postings of interest to you, you need to subscribe
to a moderated group with very narrow focus(*. No such thing exists for GZG
games (not that "GZG games" isn't already a very narrow focus).

No, I'm not volunteering.

And that's "you" in the passive sense again ;-)

*) Some newspaper guys have even gone as far as to predict the death of
freeform news and mailing lists and the rise of edited webzines. Quite
natural, given their background of one-way communication, but while
webzines have their place, I can't see Usenet dying anytime soon -- even
under the horrible onslought of spamming...

There are some free mail list servers around sort of like geocities but for
mail lists

http://www.egroups.com/list/

But I think you will be urinating in the weather system, no ones going to be
joining en masse.
