I found an excellent source of information on lead rot.

One conclusion is the purer the lead the more susceptible to lead rot. Tin is
not the culprit. You lead free pewter should be safe.

Sealing with paint or varnish has no major impact.

Could you dip/store them with baking soda to neutralize the acid, I
wonder?
