Didn't some of the military say this about 17lbs in M4s back in W.W.II as
well? ( I am sure that people can think of a lot of other examples :-)

Actually, no. The statement was "Those are British". Then we introduced the
76mm gun which was quite
adequate (even for hunting the vaunted T-34/85s in
Korea), then the retooling of the factories was a problem. Had to keep some
tanks coming (because even the worst tank, which the M4 was NOT, is worse than
no tank) and switch over production gradually.
