I think that all of us on the list would *really* appreciate it if people stop
sending MIME format messages.
For Microsoft Outlook Express (A part of the Internet Explorer package) go
to: "Tools", "Options" and click on the divider marked "Send". The first
option is "Mail Sending Format". Set it to "Plain Text"
If someone knows how to do this for Netscape please post it so we can get rid
of the excess baggage on this list.
Thank you for your cooperation, violators will be shot on target aquisition.

Colin.. who remembers a day when web browsers that sent email weren't so anal
by default.

One insidious way this happens is cutting and pasting text into the email
client which may inadvertently cause the message to use a non plain text
encoding. This all depends on the application you cut and paste from, but it
had caught me out in the past.
Obvious client side effects are fancy fonts and font control bold, italic,
underline etc.
Looking at the archives the recent MIME crimminals are fairly obvious as that
is only plain text and a good way to check if you are conforming.

since all the mail goes through listfuhrer Seidl's majordomo machine,
isn't it possible to filter it there? check for non-plain messages and
bounce them back to their source? i think it would just involve finding
and checking the content-type header in the message.
come on, it's a simple bit of perl hacking, and the world would be forever
grateful for such an innovation. majordomo allows moderated lists, so i
imagine the infrastructure is there already.

Indeed it would be a good way to stop attachments in general.
Now Matt's legal battles are over maybe he has the time, but he's on a 'frisco
sabbatical at the moment so might miss this discussion.

if we sent him a message, he could read it when he got back. i'm sure that
when he does return, he'll pipe up and ask what he missed, though, so we can
tell him then.

I'm hear and reading this stuff, but I think you all under estimate how hard
it is to search through the majordomo code (1) and modify it to search through
all the message headers (2) looking for a mime type.
After I'm finished getting setup in my new office (stupid X stuff. Compile
faster!), I'll try and take a look though.

Why does a Bugs Bunny cartoon come to mine everytime I read this subject?
(music to Ride of the Valkyries of course)
